Vista 64 freezes up after boot.

Hi, I am new here, but I am having a problem with my computer. This just started this morning. I have been using this pc without any vista related problems for several months now. THis morning I sat down at my desk to see the boot error message stating that it can't find a boot device: insert dmedia or reboot. I rebooted and got the same thing. I changed absolutely nothing the day before. When I powered the pc down and turned it back on, it loaded up vista to the log on screen. I proceded to log in. It looked like things were all better. But then, the desktop froze within minutes. I tried to load up Task Manager or ctrl alt del, but nothing worked. After powering down, I loaded up the safe mode and ran a virus scan with Kasperky Internet Security 2009. After about 4 minutes of scanning, that froze up too! So I hard rebooted back into safe mode and loaded up msconfig to only start up core programs inc. KIS 09. This time I got the log on screen and only was able to get to the "welcome" (loading) screen before the desktop loads.

Any suggestions as to what to do next would be helpful. Remember I only have a few minutes of time to do anything before vista freeezes up.

Thanks.

Hi Dosejam, welcome to the board.

How about restore your system in safe mode to a restore point before the incident.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I tried that and I got to the same point where I'm stuck at the welcome screen. PC freezes right there after several tries.

Another issue I run into is when I do a reboot of any kind, my BIOS does not recognize my hard drive. It recognizes the HD after I do a full power down though. I tried reseating my memory and changing the sata port that the HD is connected to. Still getting the same issues.

Ok, bad SATA cable or loosen SATA connection is a known cause for this sort of problem. Go a head and replace the SATA cable with an aftermarket one when you have a chance. Mean while, disconnect and reconnect, wiggle and shake the connector at the HDD to make sure it is seat and secure. Now boot it up with fingers crossed. ;)

Hope this is helping

I tried that and it did not improve anything. But the pc only doesn't recognize the HD only after a reboot. Not after a power off. Is there a Linux distro that I can load up on a live cd that will search for virus's?

I tried the Kaspersky Rescue disc since that is the same AV I use. No viruses found. Then I tried loading a live cd of Ubuntu and could not get it to load before pc froze. So I know now that this can't be a Vista issue. I am wondering if it's possible for the Hard Drive to fail? How could this happen if it's the case?

It is usually a good not to use the same anti malware you already have , as they find different things.

It could be a hard drive issue - they all fail, it's just a question of when.

Try reload optimized defaults or what it is called in your bios. Flashing to new would be difficult unless you can do it through usb drive? If you need any changes, like increased volt or dif. than default timings for ram be sure to edit that after reload of fixed preset.

Some repairing like chkdsk would not hurt - if possible to activate before locking up, else use dvd/command prompt like this How to automatically repair Windows Vista using Startup Repair or find tutorials on this site.

Could be dying hd - perhaps Ultimatebootcd can prove it by running test tools on it?

And dont forget memory - could also be that. Check with Memtest86 or the one build into Vista, including DVD.

Hardware including bios or software is the question - dont think virus after Linux test.

Thanks for the advice. I ran the Ultimate Boot CD and ran SeaTools on the HD. My HD is a Seagate 500GB. The short test failed after 10% and referred me to take the long test which scans all sectors. I ran that and it failed after 60 seconds. It said error detected at LBA 3276957. Error on Identify Command. So it found errors on the drive but could not tell me what was wrong. So then I tried to run another short test, and I got the message "Drive has been overtemp". Any ideas what any of this means?

Seagate's have a 5 year warranty...have them replace the drive.
