Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the forums and the reason im Posting is i have a older (2004) Modle Alienware Laptop computer witch i upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate.
Eveything is working great thus far except after the install my DVDRW Drive witch is a SlimType DVDRW SOSW-852S ATA Device. it dose show up in my computer if i insert a disk it dose not tell me what hte disk is and dose not boot the disk. I can hear it spinning. the Drive dose show up in my BISO aswell. it can also boot from the vista CD and Format and Re Install windows Vista ( i tried to boot XP Pro and no luck on hte drive working) i called alienware they said it MIGHT be a incompatable hardware issue.. Any ideas on this would be great i have read meny fourms on this issue with this drive and they all seemed to just not work in or out of the windows OS but mine DOSE work outside the OS,

Thank You in Advance
Matt

I Tried what you had suggested. however i could not find the firmware. Alienware dose not have this device listed. but after i tried them i tried to boot XP disk/DVD/CD/Vista disk.
After deleteing the device in the device manger, and folowing your steps Except the one to slect the driver, Vista DVD boots in Windows now...Progress has ben made, however XP Disk/DVDs/CDs still no luck only the Vista disk....if you or anyone knows were i can get the firmware for this please let me know so i can give it a shot

Thank You, prasathkumar for your advice.

Hi kaliaus, welcome to the board.

Besides Alienware, try to check on the manufacturer who built the drive and also at Dell since Alienware has been merged with Dell.

Hope this helps.

From one Alienware m5790 owner running Vista Ultimate x64, I can tell you without a doubt that there is no Firmware update for the Alienware notebook Optical drives. Vista should load the default driver. Try checking to see if it has an assigned drive letter under computer management. Check Device Manager also, If it shows, uninstall the device, and restart computer.

Did you follow this articleand try to delete upper/lower filter ?

Let me know the hardware/Vendor ID of your dvd drive so that our forum members will try to check for firmware.

Follow this to get hardware/vendor ID for your DVD drive (screenshot is for display adaptor).
devicemanagerod3.jpg

"VEN_" is the vendor ID and "DEV_" is the Device ID.

Above screenshot is in different language. it should be in "hardware ids" instead of "ie. de instancia ......xx.x....".

Good luck.

I suspect your drive may need replacement/Reinstallation

reinstall the hardware:
1. Uninstall the drive in device Manager
2. Shutdown computer
3. Remove screw and pull out optical drive, and check connection
4. re-insert drive, restart Computer

See Attached file:Alienware optical drive Hardware re-install

Replace Optical Drive:
Sony NEC Optiarc DVD-RW IDE for Alienware Notebooks $47 (new)

Sony-NEC Optiarc website
note- Optiarc does not support its drives, and instead refers users to the Retailer (in this case Alienware)

Something else you might want to consider-
Go to "my Hive" and see if there is a BIOS update for your system. If you have the m5750/m5790 I have a BIOS. If you list your model I can check for a BIOS for you.

Replace the drive then. Or try this to re-install xp-
Boot off vista disk, follow prompts to install, at partition screen DELETE ALL PARTITIONS, cancel install, remove vista dvd, insert xp disk, and shutdown/restart (by holding down power button)

Sony NEC Optiarc DVD-RW IDE for Alienware Notebooks $40
Sentia 3200 CD-RW/DVD-ROM $21

Replace/re-install Walkthrough (remove 1 screw/slide out/pop off faceplate/reattach)
