Black screen issue and broken Explorer

This site is really useful. Thanks in advance.

I recently started having a set of issues with my Vista Ultimate 64 installation on my NVIDIA NFORCE 680i MB machine. First, I started to see the black screen issue. When I was able to finally get around that with the "Last Known Good" setting, I found 3 new issues. First, none of the networking worked. I couldn't open the task tray item for networking and I could open the control panel. Upon a try it would kill explorer. Second, I can't right click anywhere. I wanted to run CMD.exe as administrator and a right click would causes Windows explorer to restart. Lastly, I can't log off the machine. When I select logoff, I get the blue and green screen, then I wait indefinitely.

Basically, when I have the black screen issue, I can't do anything. When I eliminate it I can't start networking or right click.

I did have a power outtage, but haven't installed anything that I think could've done this.

Here are a few things I've tried:
1) Restore from a restore point. No matter which restore point I get the same results.
2) Ran virus scanner, all clean.
3) When I have the black screen issue, I can't do anything. When I eliminate it I can't start networking.
4) Defrag the drive.
5) Updated MOBO bios.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mullion.

This has been a painful process.

Making the Vista x64 SP1 slipstreamed DVD via vLite has been painful. First I tried this on a Vista 32 VMware image. That doesn't. When I tried it on a Vista 64 VMware I learned that there are issues with a Vista 64 image running with 2 CPUs on a Vista 64 host. When I finally get it to work, the .ISO wouldn't burn correctly. I never got a correct burn. I tried multiple ISOs and burning utilities - ImgBurn, Acohol 120, etc. The error I got was a failure on the install.wim file a few steps into install steps outline in the repair document.

This whole process was painful and took a week of time tinkering.

I decided to download and create an ISO from MSDN which worked fine. However, when I get to step 10 of the repair guide the installer freezes at Gathering files (0%)...

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Addititionally, when I try to uninstall the Vista SP1 service pack per the instructions, the control panel for "View Installed Updates" freezes. I'm not sure what happen to this computer. I am able to log in consistently now after I did a Last Known Configuration, however none of the networking components work and right click on desktop doesn't work. I have a lot of software installed that would take a long time to reinstall which is why I'm hesistating on a rebuild.

I originally installed a purchased copy of Vista Ultimate and install x64 since I have 8gb of ram.

Thanks again.
