wierd symbol on boot

I have a Dell XPS 720 Red running Vista Home Premium 32bit. When I restarted my PC last night it started normally and then on the 2nd boot screen (where F2 for setup F12 for options) still in DOS black screen and white lettering, before windows started I got .-||||-. and then my cursor prompt. And my cursor just sat there flashing...and windows never started...what the heck is that symbol mean? How do I fix? Any help with this is much appreciated.:cry:

Hi xsuedeheadx, welcome to the forum!

Try putting the vista disc in (in the bios 'Boot Priority' section make sure first boot is the dvd-rom its in). When 'to boot from cd hit any key to continue' comes up, do it. Let it run its course and when the window screen finally comes up select 'repair' then on the next screen choose 'Startup'. I believe it is the top one. Follow the prompts from there. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum. Following on JaxMacFL's post, you may also try system restore on the same screen (recovery window) if startup repair fails.
