Installing non SP1 Vista 64 Problem

I have a retail copy of Vista 64 (version 66R-0002), that appears to not include SP1. I currently am running XP x86, and want to add Vista 64 with a clean install on an open partition for dual boot. I have run the install from the DVD drive boot, and it gets up to the first auto-reboot and then shortly after that it blue screens too quickly to read and then reboots. My first attempt was with a full 4 GB of RAM, but after reading of problems, I reduced this to a single stick of 2 GB. All USB connections except the keyboard and mouse have been removed. No other peripherals installed other than X-Fi sound and two XFX 8800GT video cards in SLI. I was going to build a slipstream DVD, but the tutorial says that x64 slipstream can only be built from an already installed x64 installation. I am suspecting that this is an older version of Vista, and doesn't include drivers for the newer 780i motherboard and quad processor CPU, but I am guessing. I know that people who are using SP1 are doing OK with my MB and graphics cards. Where should I be looking to find out what is blocking the install? I would greatly appreciate any assistance that any of the forum members can offer. I really need x64 to fully utilize my 8 GB of RAM, and I need the RAM for some of my applications. Thanks,

Doug

Yuo haven't taken out ALL unnecessary hardware. This will include your X-Fi sound card and one of your graphics cards.

Have you over-clocked your machine in any way?

Thanks for the feedback. I will remove one of the graphics cards and the X-Fi Audio card and try another load of the software. As for overclocking, I have not yet overclocked the CPU, but I did move the memory voltage up to the mfg. recommended 2.1 volts, even though the BIOS defaulted to 1.85 volts. I will reduce that to default also, just to make sure. I will report back the results later today.

Thanks again for the rapid response.

Thanks for the info. I am familiar with this tutorial, but I decided to not use it when I learned in another tutorial that in order to slipstream an x64 SP1 to the x64 disk I had to make it on a 64K OS. I am trying to install the 64K OS, and it hasn't loaded yet. I haven't found any info saying that I can do this from my 32K XP, so its on the shelf for now. IF I ever get it loaded I'll definitely make a slipstreamed DVD for future use using this tutorial.

Hey Doug,

What you could also try, is get all the Vista x64 drivers you need for your mobo and video cards and stuff and put it on a disk (if you have a 2nd drive) or a flash or something. When you install Vista x64, put in the disk/flash with drivers when it asks for the location of other drivers. Then just go in and select the drivers you want to install. This should solve the driver issue. If not, see below.

As long as you have a purchased copy of Vista, you can go and find a torrent for it somewhere (just make sure it is virus free) and DL that to a disk, and install. Just use your Code. (Not recommended)

Thanks folks. I removed the X-Fi Gamer card and one of the GPUs and then reloaded and it went in OK. I later added the second GPU back in, loaded all the new 64K drivers for all that needed them, and did a total system update and its still running OK. I have had some problems though, and they eventually need fixed.

1. When I install the X-Fi card the system blue screens during startup of Windows and dumps a file to the HD and then reboots. I've left it out for now and am using Mobo audio, which isn't really too bad. Too bad you can't load the drivers for X-Fi without the hardware in place. I was hoping that would perhaps solve my problem. There is obviously a conflict somewhere that is causing the problem.

2. When I try to turn on SLI in the nVidia Control Panel (latest rev), the driver crashes to default and the nVidia Control Panel freezes and has to be killed. I then have to reload the driver to get my nVidia graphics back. I'm working with both cards installed but am only using one of the two cards till I get this fixed.

The X-Fi and SLI worked fine in XP, so the hardware is OK.

Other than those 2 issues, Vista 64 is working great, and all 8 gb of memory are present and accounted for.

So, if anyone has any ideas about the 2 items above I'd enjoy hearing what you think.

Thanks again to all for the great suggestions.

Do you have the latest drivers download from nVidia? Maybe that would solve your SLI problem?

The same applies to your X-Fi Sound.

Thanks Peter.

Yes, the latest nVidia drivers for both the GPU and motherboard have been installed. I also tried some older versions to see if that helps, as it sometimes does, but no luck.

Regarding the X-Fi, the drivers will not install unless the board is installed, so it doesn't make any difference what driver level you have, if the system is crashing when the board is installed, I have all the latest x64 drivers waiting for a chance to be installed.

I am continuing a net search to see what I can find, but I suspect someone else has had this problem before with Vista 64 having some difficulties with hardware, so I'm hoping that someone on this board will have some first hand experience and any other advice will be very much appreciated. Thanks,

Doug

Hey Doug, you said you got a BSOD with the HW installed. Can you get the code for it? Perhaps that would help us solve it. Though more likely it will just tell us there is a HW conflict. But it would still help.

Hi folks,

Amazing thing happened. After reinstalling the X-Fi card several times it finally loaded OK. Could have been a dirty socket or slightly misaligned card in the socket. Anyway, X-fi is working. Now only the SLI problem to resolve.
