Trying to help my friend who cannot even get on his computer. No start up menu and he keeps getting a message: slcext.dll was not found. After that the computer asks him to log off and restart. He has no icons on the computer or the start button. Please help if you can. Thanks

See if he can boot into Safe Mode and try a System Restore to a point before the problem.

Otherwise, you may need to d/l the slcext.dll file and copy it to:

C:\Windows\system32

Is it a 32 or 64 bit installation ?

Do either of you have access to a Vista install dvd, or a recovery disc with System recovery options?

If not, you can d/l one from here and burn to cd with Burn CDCC isoburner - do not format the cd, if Autoplay pops up just close it.

(Make sure you d/l the right one - 32bit or 64bit ).

We should then be able to either replace the file, or copy any essential data off the hd, if a reinstall is needed.

I assume he has some kind of reinstall/recovery cd's or partition.

Hi Jrbb98, welcome to the board.

I believe you friend's computer problem is due to experiencing a bad virus attack.

Beside what SIW2 has suggested, you may also try this. Download and run Kaspersky Rescue as instructed. Kaspersky Rescue Disk Free Download and Reviews - Fileforum

If everything is clear, run auto window update. If not helping follow SIW2's instruction.
