Solved Vista-64: what plays MOV files?

Son just sent me some MOV files from his camera, but the vista media center and media player will not open them.

Knowing how touchy Vista-64 can be, I don't want to experiment installing software that will crash the system. [happened before]

what do you recommend to play MOV?

thanks

MOV is a Quicktime movie requiring the Quicktime codec. You can download the QT codec for free, with the professional version you will be required to spend money.

My personal recommendation would be to go for the Quicktime Alternative Lite package, which works fine in Vista 64 (I'm using it). This is free and has many features including the ability to download HD trailers from the Apple trailers site.

Simple enough to uninstall if you don't like it...

I know of 2 different codec packages that are add-ons for windows media player that let you play virtually any movie or audio file in it. Would you like them or do you prefer to just use the quick time player?
