Messed up Registry (can't system restore)

Hi,

So I downloaded Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express through MSDNAA, and installed it but it would not create new projects. I found that to fix it you had to use a fix called "subinacl.msi". I found the installer on the Microsoft download page and used it. It worked and I could create new projects, but the next time I restarted my computer many things went wrong.

The audio service wasn't working, so I checked my services list and it said it was stopped. I tried starting it and it wouldn't start. I thought the "subinacl" did this so I went to do a system restore, but system restore won't run (see link)

Error message created by System Restore, file backup and Defrag in Windows Vista:

I get the Error: 0x8007007B. I tried to do what that site recommends but I get the Error: 0x8007000E in the SystemPropertiesProtection.

Is there a way to fix this without using the Vista recovery CD?

Well you have two issues here according to the error codes:

First issue:
Error: 0x8007007B - "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
System Restore will now close"
Faulty Volume caused by a bad OEM image
What this means is the Factory installation of you O/S is corrupted

second issue:
Error: 0x8007000E - System Restore fails with error in the Windows Recovery Environment.
Alot of files to restore and insufficient RAM to write the data to for recovery operation- (Vista Business requires a Minimum 1GB of System Memory)

Try, as suggested, upgrading RAM to at least 1GB, and then using recovery disk, re-install Vista. You may have no System Restore Points Available to perform a recovery, so even if you do repair the filename/directory name, or Volume lable Syntax, It may not help you in fixing the problems you are having now.

The error 0x8007007B occurs when the system is set to store restore points to a wrong path or location (Figure 1).

Hmm, I'll look into a few things the next time I boot into Vista. If anyone has a solution though let me know, I'd rather not have to go through the process of a re-install. Thanks for the quick reply.
