Hello newbie here. Newbie to Vista also so I am looking for your expertise/input to guide me in a computer selection...please :)

I am looking to buy a laptop. Do not need many bells or whistles, however, here are the specs:

Processor & Memory:

  • AMD Sempron 3600+ (2.0GHz)
  • HyperTransport Technology at up to 800MHz
  • 256kb L2 Cache
  • 2GB PC5300 DDR2 SDRAM memory (both slots occupied)
Drives:

  • 160GB (5,400 RPM) Serial ATA hard drive
  • DVD SuperMulti Double Layer Drive supports 11 formats
Graphics & Video:

  • 15.4" widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display; 1280 x 800 (WXGA) native resolution
  • ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics
Communications:

  • Atheros Wireless LAN 802.11b/g
  • 10/100 Ethernet
  • Modem
Audio:

  • Built-in stereo speakers
  • Sound volume control dial
Keyboard:

  • 86-key US keyboard
  • TouchPad pointing device
Expandability:

  • Two main memory slots (occupied)
  • ExpressCard/54 slot
  • 4-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter slot accepts Secure Digital, SDHC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and MultiMediaCard cards
Ports:

  • RGB port (monitor)
  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • RJ-45 port (LAN)
  • RJ-11 modem port
  • Headphone output
  • Microphone input
Operating System:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 (32-bit)
Additional Software:

  • Microsoft Works 9
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Norton 360 All-In-One Security (trial version)
This is my question/dilemma:
I have been told that running Microsoft Windows Vista on wireless will take "forever" to load with only 2GB on this computer. Is this true?
My needs are very limited for this laptop, just looking to perform limited work on it...e-mail, small business folders etc.

I apologize for my ignorance, as I said I am a newbie in many ways and hoping to learn as I go. Stumbled upon this web-site while looking for information on Windows Vista.
I would greatly appreciate your input of knowledge.

Thank you!!

Hi Bonnies, and welcome to Vista Forums.

While having more RAM (usually up tp 4GB) would help improve your computer's performance, it's not the only thing that affects startup time. You can take a look at and adjust the items listed here to help improve startup time though.

For what you are wanting to do with it, it should be fine though. :)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Agreed. Ram would help. That is the bare minimum needed to run Aero.

I would actually not recommend that one for a few reasons:
1) That is a single core CPU.
2) Not enough RAM
3) GPU sucks.

While I understand that you need only limited use, in order to keep up with newer programs, I would recommend something a bit better.

It is up to you, and that will run just fine.
