Unknown Device USB

I know there are numerous threads on this problem and I have probably hit them all, but I have yet to solve my issue.

It all began when I tried to install a USB driver for a Samsung data cable (for my cell phone) I recently purchased. I went to the following page (DataCableDrivers.com - The Source for Cell Phone USB Data Cable Drivers and Software Installation Information) and downloaded the driver and installed it then plugged in the cable and ever since then I have an Unknown Device in my device manager under USB's. Here's what i have tried to fix the problem.
1. Restore to point before the install
2. Uninstalled all USB items under device manager (once in safe mode as well)
3. Unplugged machine overnight with battery removed

None of these worked. It is worth noting that the Unknown Device appears even though there is nothing plugged into any port. I have three ports and they are all unused but still the error. If I do try to plug in a device (say my printer) I get another Unknown Device. I'm beginning to think the issue is hardware and I may need to ship the unit back to Acer for repairs.

Machine is an Acer Aspire 5100

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello barecycles.

It could be the USB plug itself. Is it on the back of the computer by the mouse ports? Or is it on the front?

I have three ports, one on the left side (which I use primarily for my printer) and two in the back. Presently none of the ports work with any device I plug in. In addition, there is an Unknown Device detected when all 3 ports are not being used. I do believe it to be the port itself although by just looking at each on e i cannot see anything out of the ordinary like a bent pin or the like.

Thanks!
