Vista System Restore initializing problem

I am experience problems with a system restore that I started some 11 hours ago on a one and half year old Fujitsu Siemens AMILO LI 1718 laptop. The problem started a few days ago when it took an “age” to boot up and everything seemed very slow. I managed to run Antivirus and Malware software to see if there were any virus’ but none were found, hence the attempt to restore.
All I can see at present is “Please wait … system restore is initializing” and the circular egg time is continually spinning. One keyboard light remains on whilst another flashes intermittently.
The OS is x32 bit Vista Home Premium, Dual Core, RAM is 2gb, memory 80gb and 160 Mhz.
My question is: do I leave it for another xx hours or should I turn it off and reboot.

i would reboot with the windows cd and try restoring that way. the setup process should have a repair option. hopefully you have a couple of restore points to choose from.
