External Data Transfer Problem

I hope I can explain this....

I have a dell inspirion 1501 laptop with vista home basic.

I am running out of hard drive space (60gb )and bought a new hard drive (160gb), I also bought a cms data transfer here is the link:

data transfer solutions for cloning and migrating to a new laptop hard drive

Since I am trying to take the simplest way to achieve the goal of switching hds, I thought this would be it. However, my computer is not recognizing the drive for the external usb device. I have been online with the tech all day yesterday, and I have not been able to figure this out.

I really need this new harddrive, and unless I can save my windows vista os by transfer, (i have the key, but no cd) I will loose my entire os.

The tech won't be back til monday and I would like to get this transfer done this weekend. One thing he asked me before closing shop yesterday, was to put the device on my desktop and see if it showed up, well it did the same thing, except for this one thing....

Also when I open properties on the device manager on windows xp, under cms portIO driver properties the same range exist[as the vista] in the Resource Settings I/O Range 0340-0343, but down in the xp, conflicting device list: "no conflicts"

where as, down lower in that same box on VISTA it :
listed "conflicts",

Input/Output Range 0340 - 0343 used by:
ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver

Does anyone know what that means, or if that info would lead me to a solution?

Sorry if I am not clear, I am a bit dazed by all of this....

it sounds like your cms device is trying to use the same resources as your video card. two devices cant use the same resources at the same time. you can either set the resources manually or delete both devices from device manager, reboot, and let windows reinstall them.

First thank you for responding, this is driving me nuts.

If I figured out how to delete the video card (is it the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC listed in the sound video and game controllers?) and re-install them I think I might try that. If you would not mind pointing me to a reliable source to walk me through the steps, I sure would appreciate it!

I found this link, Tips: How To Remove And Re-install Video Card Drivers? - Tips & Tweaks

but it says for windows xp, might be a difference?

I think it might be safer for me to try that, than the "manual" route you mentioned :)

Thanks ever so much!

I found out that this model of Inspiron 1501 did not come with a " dedicated video card", however, it turned out that I was in need if another driver update. After downloading that driver this process is moving forward, I am able to format the drive (doing that right now) and that should make everything work fine!

Thanks for the heads up on the idea of video card, which led me to the fix!!!

Thanks so much!!!
