new built system. fresh everything.
hardware:
amd 9950 phenom
2x2gb crucial 4-4-4-12 balistix
gigabyte motherboard
saphire 4870 512mb
seagate 640gb 32m cache
ocz 600watt psu

OS: bought from newegg. win vista 64 bit

problem: I assembled the system no problem and began with installing the OS. Once vista was installed I started loading the Mobo drivers for audio and lan. That all went fine but soon after all my apps and programs started randomly crashing...constantly, and couldnt keep up the system very long w/o a bsod. So I installed my graphics drivers and couldn't get through that with out a crash. Tons of software/OS crashes later I decide to reinstall vista. Same experience 2nd time so I was about fed up with vista and decided to try windows XP. Format HDD and as soon as I got to the windows loading page it bsod's... i've tried 3 times and same result. Please help me. Any suggestions? My main issue is I just want to run vista, so I don't care too much about running XP.

The 4870 doesn't use 500w, it's the suggested minimum PSU rating.

I would try allowing the motherboard to auto-configure the ram timings or slow them down and try again, I'd also check the settings and make sure you've sent the modules enough voltage.

not sure what you mean about the vid. card. and as for the ram i've tried it at default voltage and timings, as well as setting it to what the manufacturer recomends. i've ran memtest86 for 8+ hrs with no errors.

Any one of those components could have issues even if new...
Start by borrowing another PSU and swap it in there.
This is going to be a process of elimination so let's do the easy ones first.
No BSOD messages at all ? ?
If you do get one write it down and post it here.

ya lots of bsod's next one ill write it down. never thought of the psu causing problems. im assuming at this point if it's hardware then its the motherboard. already tested the ram, and switched the hdd out for an ide one that i know is good and got same results. took out the vid. card and am running the machine off the onboard graphics. i know cpu issues are rare. so i thought maybe motherboard is bad.

You may have already tried trying one stick of memory at a time. Random restarts could happen because there is a bad sector in the memory you have. Thus, every time the computer tries to access that memory sector, your computer is restarting. It would be worth trying different sticks of memory before going with a new PSU.

Also, one sad note to add: this issue of constantly having the computer restart could have an adverse effect on other components [such as your PSU, VideoCard, etc].

Let me know how it goes! Good Luck!
