What are Wdi System and Wdi Service Hosts, and how do I fix problems in them?

Vista Guru
This evening after an unexpected shut-down of Windows, I got a prompt to check out Problem Reports and Solutions. This is what I found in that log;

Problems with Wdi Service Host - 48 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09.

Wdi Service Host1.JPG

Problems with Wdi System Host - 35 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09.

Wdi System Host 1.JPG

And do the two following snips have any relevance to the two above??

Wdi 3.JPG

Since I'm not too bright in 'techno matters', only simple explanations, resolutions or suggestions please.

On your first photo you have

Files that help describe the problem

Version.txt
minidump.mdmp
You have to read this files.File Minidump.mdmp you have to debug.Here you have debugger Debugging Tools for Windows - Overview

OK. So I clicked on the link, and that opened this site;

Debugging Tools for Windows.JPG

......which further down gave me this information;

Debugging Tools for Windows.a..JPG

As you can see by the highlight, I clicked onto 'Install Debugging Tools for Windows 32-bit Version.' , and that opened up this page;

Debugging Tools for Windows.b..JPG

I then clicked on 'Download the Debugging Tools for Windows - Current Release Version 6.11.1.402 - Feb 6, 2009. and that produced the following;

Debugging Tools for Windows.c..JPG

I saved and installed the Debugging Tools to my Program Files.

Now I'm lost without a clue as to how to use the Debugging Tools to resolve the issue of;

Version.txt
minidump.mdmp :shock:

A bit of background first:

- A "service" in this cotext means a special process that gets monitored by an OS component called the Service Control Manager (SCM). On bootup, the SCM sends each service a type of "start yourself now" message and sits waiting for acknowledgement of successful startup from the service. If that acknowledgement doesn't come, the SCM can take action, including logging the types of warnings you're seeing.

- The WdiSystemHost and WdiServiceSost services are part of Vista's self-healing framework - those "Checking for a solution to the problem..." messages that Vista displays when it's trying to automatically fix something come from the work performed by those two services.

- The "Service Hang Report" messages you're seeing do not technically describe a crash. Instead, the SCM has decided that something has gone wrong in the Wdi services, and it has dumped the process memory into a file (that MDMP file) in the hope that subsequent analysis with a debugger will help someone to figure out what's going on.

- Debugging crashes with WinDBG is hard enough, but debugging hangs (deadlocks, livelocks, miscellaneous timeouts...) is far, far from trivial. In all honesty, I'd suggest not bothering with the debugger yourself in this instance. It's not a good place to start learning ;)

Suggestions:

1) For now, assume the BSoD you experienced has nothing to do with the Wdi hang events. BSoDs have their own - entirely different - causal conditions. In your \Windows\minidump folder you may see a *.dmp file whose timestamp matches your BSoD occurrence. Try your luck with the debugger on that dump instead - there are people here who can help you.

2) The Wdi thing may be a red herring. It's possible that the SCM is being too quick to declare an error condition, and that the Wdi services are simply too busy to respond in time. If you can upload those mdmps somewhere and paste a link, someone with debugger experience may be able to help you with the Wdi situation.

3) Have a beer on me for your dedication to troubleshooting ;)

Had a bit of a laugh here H2SO4, a Gormless Numpty giving advice to a Fossilised Brain!:confused:

Hey thanks for a well presented and written response....In some ways I'm now beginning to understand what lies before me, and although this is going to be one heck of a steep learning curve, I'm willing to give it a go.

I did have a look at the 'geek-speak' paper that Flavius gave the link to, but quickly determined that for me to attempt any recovery outlined in that Tech Advice, would be like sending the Sepoys and Bengali Lancers in with the Light Brigade at Balaclava.

However, I'll have to leave off for now, as I'm away tomorrow over the ditch to NewZild for a few days, and will get back on the case when I return. Catch you then.
