Importing .avi files into Movie Maker

I am new to Vista. I have tried importing .avifiles from my DV video camera into Movie maker. It only plays the audio . When I first downloaded these files they would not play the video in media player but after I downloaded a codec both audio & video are playing in the media player. I was hoping that this would fix the problem in Movie Makler but it still will not show the video files. I have some video clips from a recent wedding and need to edit these before creating a movie.
Any helpful suggestions would be very much appreciated.

gspot has reported that all codecs installed and o/s should be able to open my video files. Media Player will open video & audio but Movie Player will only open audio

I am still not able to import .avi flies into Movie Maker using Vista Home premium home. My son using vista ulimate can import these files into MM

I hv downloaded the codec programme but am reluctant to install because it is asking me to delete all other codec files on my system. Have converted avi files to wmv and these i can import into MM and therefore edit my clips
