I have a question I was wondering if some one could answer . I know there are a lot very knowledgeable people on this forum and someone would probably have an answer. I have a HP compac 17" laptop . On the Id sticker on the bottom Of the laptop there is a product key number. I used Magic Jelly bean finder and it came up with a totally different product key #. Why is this. Thank you.

pre built systems dont require a product key, as they are oem and are pre installed on the system, wouldnt be very productive if the compaq had to enter a product key for each computer they manufacture, and they fire out at least 5000 computers a day in the US alone. So they effectively use a keygen, they are authorised to do so as they are an official microsoft dealer/partner. The product key affixed to the side of your computer is the product key that comes with the OEM version of Vista, OEM software looks like below. You have no chance of stealing my key as ive purposely blurred the product key image.
also admins if im breaching some sort of law, please edit this post as you deem fit.

Hi pawpaw,

Yes, the product key stickered on the laptop can be used with any proper install media.

However, you usually (not always) need to ring the oem - the manufacturer - to activate that installation.

It is possible to use the product key on the hd , but only in conjunction with the activation code - also on the hd. It is not hard to do , but not recommended unless you have a reasonable amount of knowledge. This avoids the need to ring to activate.

You can of course only install the Edition e.g. Basic, Premium, Ultimate that you paid for and which the product key is for.

The M$ dvd's contain the files needed for all the Editions - it is the product key (assuming you enter it when asked during the installation ) that determines which is installed from the dvd to your hard drive.

You may also like to make to make your own copy of the dvd - in case you want to install again, or use the repair functions.

Simply put the dvd in the drive, copy it to your hd as an iso image file ( most burning apps. will do this).

Then put a dvd recordable in the drive (do not format it, if autoplay pops up, just close it), and burn the iso image to the dvd.

Hope it helps

Thank You all for your help. You have answered my question. God Bless!

You're welcome, pawpaw.

You would need to make sure you are using the bit version you want, of course, 32 or 64 bit.
