Vista Beginner: 2-Quick Questions?

Ok, I just built a brand new rig on Tuesday and am using 64-bit Vista on it. This is my first time with Vista and really like it so far. Here are two small, not major (yet) problems I am having.

A) Yesterday I noticed that when I try and start up COD:WaW, I'll double-click the icon. Well it will look like it starts to load, with the screen going black, but immediately goes back to desktop. If I try it again, it will load up the right way. Is this normal?

B) When I try to run disk defragmenter, it will not finish. I've attempted twice, both times before going to bed. The first time, I woke up and my computer was in sleep mode. I woke it up and the program was still running. So I just assumed that it was because I was a dolt and forgot to remove the sleep setting. I tried it again last night, this time bumping the sleep mode to 2hrs, and woke up to the same exact problem. Now I know that I just installed 3-4 drivers and about 3 programs since Tuesday onto a 250Gb HDD, but should it really be taking that long? Is sleep mode my problem and make it longer or take it off? I will try again tonight with sleep mode off to see if that helps any.

Thanks guys for your help! oh wait, how's Firefox with Vista64? Thinking about installing that too.

Thanks

Hello Gudziel,

FF works great (using it now) on Vista (and Seven) 64bit.

Try reinstalling COD5, maybe it is a problem there.

Have you installed your Graphics drivers? Make sure those are up to date.

As for Disk DeFrag, try using another DeFrag, such as the one from AusLogics.

Lordbob:

First off, thank you very much for a quick response! I greatly appreciate it! As for your advice, I just looked over that defrag program. Consider it mine. ;) I will also download FF right after that.

As for the graphics drivers, I am pretty sure I downloaded the latest and greatest, but I will make sure when I get home. If I already did that, I will uninstall and reinstall the game. Anything is worth a try.

But thank you again for your suggestions.

Any suggestions on a good antivirus/spyware program? My PC Tools is giving me some crap right now.

Thanks again

please forgive me, as i cannot remember the exact source from where i read this, but pertaining to the vista defrag, i read that the vista defrag works when the computer is idle. if you try to perform a defrag as you used to do with xp, it could take as long as 8 hours to finish the defrag process. i had also read that if you are going to use the vista defrag, it is best to start it at night, and leave you machine running all night so that the app can have the time to finish the defrag. i would recommend a third party defragger though. i personally us jkdefrag and i have absolutely no problems with it. and yes, it is in x64 flavor.

Hey, and welcome to the forums!

Congratulations on the shift to Vista x64.

In regards to question 2: Doing a de-fragmentation on a 320 GB hard drive took me about 6-7 hours. If you just let it take a whole day to do it's thing, it will finish eventually. As for Firefox, FF3 works great on Vista x64. Some great addons to help complement arrow are the Glasser and Hide Menubar addons. For AntiVirus, I use Bitdefender and it works great.

Hope this helps,
