Sleep mode powers off after long time.

Have HP DV5Z-1100 Notebook running Vista home premium 32 bit.
Machine is running on the power supply
Put to sleep using Function F5.
Machine sleeps, all indicators off except power light and light on power button which blink at 2 second intervals..
Machine will sleep as long as 12 hours or more, but will also power off possibly in less time.
Hitting the power button wakes machine with message, "Resuming Windows"
Loaded latest version of BIOS as per HP support
Reinstalled Power Manegement as per HP support
This is not really a PROBLEM, but it should work properly.

Hello Cranford, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like it is working properly. From what you described, your computer is set for "Hybrid" mode and goes to "Sleep", then after a some time, it then enters "Hibernation" and the power light stops blinking. This is why you get the "Resuming Windows" when you wake up your computer from hibernation. The amount of time it takes will depend on what you have your "Hibernate after" time set for in the while on battery and while plugged in Power Plan Options.

Shawn, If what you say is correct then I don't have a problem. But the HP Support Center doesn't seem to realize that what you say is correct operation.
They seem to have been lumping my reported (? problem?) with the many NOT going to sleep, or awakening from sleep reports.
I tried Hibernate on this HP running Vista Premium and it was very similar to powering off.
I looked at my Wifes Acer running Vista Bacic, and it has no Hibernate option.
I think this is all about nothing and I shouldn't be so picky.
Thanks Shawn.
I'm an amateur using a Forum. But I'm learning, Slowly.
So thank you for your input Shawn.

Another point that should be illustrated, depending on your particular views on power consumption and ease of use.

Since laptops use "bricks" to convert AC (wall outlet) to DC (computer power), the power brick is constantly "working". Meaning it's pretty much using the same energy while the computer is off as when it's on.

My understanding was that hibernate had been removed from Vista, and now utilizes that "hybrid" method described (sleep first, true hibernate second).

Newbie! I too am a Newbie and am feeling my way with a new laptop and Vista. I'm a traditional person with an old desktop that grew from 95 to 98 to XP and now I'm a fledgling again. So I'll go along with just about anyone.
But The memory and internal speed of my new HP are just great. I'll just have to grow used to it and Vista and get happy again. Cranford

My Computer

Cranford,

If you do not like how long or quick it takes to enter these sleep modes, then you can easily adjust the Power Plan settings to what you prefer instead in STEP TWO of the link above.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

It would seem there are some problems with sleep and hibernate. My HP laptop has a hibernate option and a sleep option. As in my previous posts, my sleep option works fine but after an undetermined amount of time the computer "powers off". The power button "awakens" it and it posts "Resuming Windows".

BUT my Wife's Acer laptop can be put to sleep, and it will stay asleep forever and will awaken using any key.
Her Acer laptop has no Hibernate option.

Both computers are running attached to their power supplies, both are running the supplied power options. Its almost as though each machine has its own set of rules.
There are so many sleep posts, there's obviously something wrong.

Cranford,

Disabling Hibernation should allow your computer to only sleep and not use the Hybrid mode to sleep first and later hibernate.

Re: Hibernation - Enable or Disable

Shawn, Personally I am lost. I never thought there was so much involved with Sleep, Hibernate, etc
I do use the Disk cleanup and I never clicked the check mark for Hibernate files. Yet I see no options for Hibernate anywhere.
I'm giving up on this business and what will be will be.
All of this is beyond me. My suggestion to Microsoft is sit down and get this sleep, hibernate thing set up so a person can select EASILY what they prefer, such as:
Sleep indefinitively, or Sleep for X hours and then Hibernate, or sleep for X hours and then power off.
As it stands, its too complex for me to resolve. Something that appears to be so simple isn't simple.
My use of my laptop is soley on its power supply, so power consumption is not my problem. I'm going to just live with how my machine works, and forget about trying to change things. Thanks for your interest and time spent with me. Bill C.

Hello Cranford,

If you do not see the Hibernation File Cleaner option in Disk Cleanup, then Hibernation is disabled.

Take a look at this tutorial to see if may help more. It's for Windows 7, but the settings are pretty much the same. The main thing to remember is that with a laptop, you will have duplicate settings for each option. One setting for when you are "Plugged in" and one for when you are on "Battery" power.
