ok so day 5 in the back up and reinstall process... got an external hd sorted and now when i try and move one of my music folders my laptop crashes... every single time... try open it, it crashes... do a search for any songs inside it, they dont come up... try copy it, it crashes... try move it, it crashes... folder contains 3 folders and amounts to 8GB, Im a dj and cannot afford to lose the contents... virus scans are all clear, disk checks are all clear... someone please tell me what is going on?

I just dont get it... is there an program i can use to copy it and open on another computer? or some way to debug it? surely they havent made an operating system that just loses all your stuff, one folder at a time?

My Computer

Are you copy/pasting the entire folder?

Run these and see why it crashes...

Run these and save and attach to your post:

Okay here are the logs... The event viewer would only allow me to save 220 events (or similar) so I have saved all events for March. I havent used this application before so please do advise if you require more logs, either older or critical, or errors only or whatever...

In the meantime I will run the defrag and checkdisk...

Thanks for your help by the way... It's everything I can do not to throw my laptop off the balcony. I really hope this works hahaha

Nokia Windows Portable Device Driver-plug and play is not functioning properly, suggest you re-install drivers/unplug it from system

Multiple Vista crashes (probably due to driver issues)

Keberos server authentication is failing

Windows prefetch is resulting in Windows startup degradation

Suggest you remove/reinstall Keberos/there is also an issue with the Sara Conner chronicles, and portable device listed above (IE is also crashing, and there is an issue with security center and NOD32- disregard these as the IE crash happens to me, and NOD32 is listed under Security Center as being on and functional (same for me- it is a glitch either with Vista or NOD32 4 -you can stop Security center from monitoring, but I do not think it necessary)
Affter upgrading to IE8 I have noticed a decrease in IE crashes:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

try the performance link above to check disk errors, etc.,

ok will do...

the nokia thing is no problem, i recently uninstalled the program but due to a recent system restore its back again...

IE crashes... well its famous for em isnt it?

Im not sure what the Keberos thing is ill have to find out.

Sarah chronicles thing is Bittorrent crashing the system... see http://www.vistax64.com/system-security/216551-help-please-multiple-issues.html

for my original post on sunday... thats when all probs really started... thought they might have been caused by a recent system reg clean (17th of this month) but beginning to think its not the case (I'm no expert though). The only reason I say this is that the laptop was a total mess on sunday and monday, tuesday wasn't soo bad and yesterday it ran fine all day until I came accross this particular music folder. Since then it has been a real pain, probably 30+ restarts today freezing either before login or withing 5mins of it. Several attempts at safe mode just ended with the computer freezing while loading the drivers but I am running the defrag now in safemode and will also run checkdisk again on restart (have run it 3 or 4 times today already but without "scan for & attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked.

My Computer

also the system health report said no antivirus software installed or running but i am running eset ss4 at the mo, on recommendation from another post, just to let you know...

Oh yes, that is probably the problem alright-
registry cleaners are notorious for corruption of Windows- In that case I would attempt another restore to point before you installed the cleaner/removed critical Windows/Program entries, otherwise the only way to fix the corruption now is to re-install Windows.

Thats a glitch with Windows and the new version of NOD32, it is the same for me- It does show under Security Center as being installed and running- disregard.

As for disk check bad sectors- I strongly recommend scanning for atempting repair.

yeah i guess all i can do is let defrag finish, run the ammended scandisk and hope that enables me to back up my music production... failing that, another system restore (although i did restore to 10 days prior to the reg clean) and if that too fails, reinstall and lose all my work....

is it not at all possible to replace the system registry files (that where cleaned out) or is that a stupid question?

My Computer

hmmn but there lays the problem... I am in the process of backing up my folders and probably the most important folder wont let me access it...
Did you not perform regular file data backups with Vista's Backup utility?
Unfortunately, Unless you can activate the hidden admin account, or perform a "update" (repair) install of Vista you may not be able to recover the file. Appears some of the corruption has resulted in Windows not seeing your User Acct as having permissions anymore.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

NEVER, EVER use a registry cleaner if you dont understand the function of the entries it wants to "clean" They are unable to distinguish between legitimate and unwanted .dll's (amongst other things), and often result in corruption of Windows.
Reg cleaners are marketed as "Performance improvers", and is the biggest gimmick around. Half the threads in this forum for system trouble is a direct result of using them.
for more info:http://www.vistax64.com/software/212354-do-not-use-registry-cleaners.html

Try activating the hidden admin account to backup the file:

ps- backing up Windows/Program file is needless- all programs will require re-install anyways.

Just backup the "Users" folder under Computer and simply copy/paste it back after Windows re-install.

yes i see that all too clearly now... i was acting on the advice of another forum (which i shall never again visit) when i used the reg clean to combat an adware problem... I am now painfully aware that this is not the proper course of action (and according to another Vista Forums Guru, totally pointless)

Unfortunately I haven't backed up this folder, although its only really one song i cant replace... the rest would take a lot of time n effort but could be done.

And i think i must have worded that wrong.. I have all the permissions to access and move the folder... its just that the system crashes every time i attempt it...

okay will do with the back up...
just one more stupid question (for now) I know that windows is installed on a partition on C:, but how do i find out if D: is also a partition on the same hard disk?

Both C: and D: are 300GB and from what i have been told if they are 2 seperate hard disks there is no need to back up D: when i reinstall windows...

ahh,

Well, there is another thing that may work-assuming the file in question is not encrypted, and you are not using SATA drives (as they require driver installs for the O/S to see them). Alittle trick I learned. If you install MEPIS it will run on top of your hard drive-without installing, and give access to all files/folders. You can then backup the folders/files in question, then perform a reinstall of Vista.

Here is how:
How to Make a Dual Boot with Vista and XP using free partitioning Software | eHow.com
note- this is for repartitioning XP basically, so disregard those steps.
Download/burn disk
boot it up
backup files

Chances are for that size they are two (2) hdd's, either way, you can choose where to install Vista- just format C: and install there. D: will be intact, and can be used as a backup data drive.
(the easiest way to tell though, is to attempt a File backup- The utility will only allow a backup location that is not on the same drive as the source. If it allows backup to D:, then it is a seperate Hard Disk Drive (hdd).
Otherwise, enter the BIOS/RAID setup at Windows startup and it will tell you how many HDD's are installed (you may have a 640GB drive partitioned, or two (2) 320GB drives).
