How long should startup repair run for?

Or is this sort of like asking "how long is a piece of string?"

My laptop was attacked by my 9 year old computer illiterate child this morning and has since failed to bootup. I got as far as the startup repair which kicked in automatically but after several cycles (each lasting a few minutes) it has now been "attempting repairs" for over 4 hours. It won't let me cancel and I don't want to cut the power in case it is still working and not actually hung.

Any advice please? Should I let it carry on running? Should I cut the power? Any keys I could use to bypass?

Sorry I can't provide a lot of info about the machine or what happened on the run up to the error.

turn it off, during bootup after "POST" (Right before windows starts) Hit F8 repeatedly...

you should get a screen, ask to boot up into "Safe Mode"

once into safe mode... perform a system restore.

If you want to though, you can try to load up with "Last known good configuration" that may work....

Thanks, I was a bit wary of just switching off without getting advice. I booted up in safe mode but couldn't get access to the restore centre to use a restore point. So, I used the 'last known good configuration" instead and it has booted up ok. Now, to cut the risk of the same happening again I suppose I'll spend the rest of the afternoon doing some 'housekeeping'. Thanks for the help.

Oops, spoke too soon! It only appeared to boot up properly. I have my desktop up ok and the mouse moves about on the screen but nothing else happens. Keys don't work either so I can't ctr alt del to shut down. Completely frozen. Any ideas?

do you know how to access system restore?

boot up into safe mode, you should hit system restore by going start/programs/accesories/system tools/system restore.

restore it to a time before your kid messed with it.

For some reason I couldn't get system restore running when in safe mode previously. Now I can't even get running in safe mode! After the initial screen with options to enter bios, when I should be hitting F8, I get a blank screen with blinking curser and nothing else happens. If I hit F8 repeatedly it just starts to bleep at me.

Done that already - says it's repaired but it's not! The details screen says about a corrupt system volume but that it's repaired. Obviously it's not repaired. I've tried getting at various helpful programs through command prompt but none work as it needs to be run by the elevated admin. I can't enter a password through command prompt so I just end up running in circles. I seem to be blocked at every turn! Times like these I just hate vista for helpfully blocking access to everything just for our own good

It's a gateway, have you tried hitting it? :roflmao:

Try a fresh install of Vista, install it over top of itself perhaps.....
