Can't Set Restore Point in Vista Home Premium

When I try to set a Restore Point in Vista I get the following:

could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: The request is not supported.
0x80070032

This started recently. Any idea on how to fix this?

Re: Can't Set Restore Point in Vista Home Premium

Couple things to try:

1. Check to make sure shadowcopy is enabled under "system"
2. Have you changed your Shadowcopy storage max size? If it is too small it will not be able to back up.
3.Have you used registry cleaners? Their use more often than not cause Windows Corruption neccessitating a re-install/Repair.

See image below for creating a manual restore point-otherwise, the computer will create its own restore point called a "System Checkpoint" (this is an automated process)

Re: Can't Set Restore Point in Vista Home Premium

Thanks for the quick reply. Wouldn't surprise me if the registry cleaners had a hand in this. Unfortunately, the system was pre-installed and there were no OS disks for it. Acer suggested reverting back to the factory settings which means dumping everything that's on the drive. I sure don't want to have to reinstall all my programs! If I were to purchase an upgrade to Vista Ultimate on disk would that help any in cleaning up the problems?

Note: You mention Check to make sure shadowcopy is enabled under "system" Somehow I can't find where this is.

see the checkmark? thats shadowcopy (automatic restore points) I think buying a $100+ disk to reinstall/repair is alittle excessive- in any event you would still have to reinstall your programs.

Hi,

Try this:

Click Start Orb , type Services.msc. - click it to open it.

Scroll to Windows Event Log - rt click and select Properties.

In the drop down box - select Automatic.

Click Start to start the service.

Also see if Task Scheduler Service is started.

Restart your machine.

Re: Can't Set Restore Point in Vista Home Premium

The Event Log was running. Task Manager wasn't and is set on Manual. The setup screen is grayed out so I can't change its settings.

What about my upgrading the OS so I can, at least, have the disks to perform repairs, etc? Will that work?

Re: Can't Set Restore Point in Vista Home Premium

Hi Formerfarmer,

Try Flavius suggestion first.

If that doesn't do it, d/l this .zip file, rt click and Extract.

Then double click on the .reg file to merge it it - ok the warning.

VistaSERVSCH.zip

Then restart.

Might have been a registry cleaner - which one are you using ?

Worth checking with:

www.malwarebytes.org

Download the free version ( think they call it a Trial now) you just need to install it - then manually update and scan.

Hope it helps

Hi,

1.Turn off system restore(type SystemPropertiesProtection.exe in run and hit enter)

untitled.jpg

Remove the tick mark on all the drives and click ok

2.Restart Windows,

and turn it back on. (put the tick mark again in c)

You lose all
old restore points, but it should start working.

I've been told that there are no Shadow Copies available in Vista Home Premium. Is this really true? The link to Shadow Copies on the System Restore screen is absent.
