Dear Everyone,

Please could anyone help me please,

When i go into my downloads folder, a message comes up saying Windows Expolorer is not working. then .. Restarting and my whole desktop refreshes...

I wonder because I installed a microsoft update which i dont think installed properly crashed my computer, so i did a system restore. That was a week before this problem arose. If anyone has any ideas It would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Justin

Explorer is crashing and restarting. There are many reasons why that can occur, and I'd suggest you try to get rid of non-default "shell extensions" first.

If you do a search here and on the web, there will be many tutorials on how to disable "explorer shell extensions".

It would also be useful if you could run WERCON and copy'n'paste the "appcrash" data corresponding to any Explorer.exe events listed in the history.

wercoN

It's the Windows Error Reporting CONsole. Just type WERCON into the start button search box, and then view "history" on the left hand side. You may be able to see entries pertaining to explorer.exe crashes. Those data may help someone to help you.

You're in luck.

ad2mpgdmux.dll <=== culprit

That DLL is running "inside" Explorer and causing a crash. A cursory web search suggests other people are experiencing the same issue. I suggest you work out exactly which software introduced that DLL onto your machine, and then to either update the software in question, or even remove it if you don't need it. (Without ad2mpgdmux.dll in its current version, Explorer would almost certainly not crash.)

Web searches also return a bunch of indications that it may be part of a virus in the top 10 hits, but that's not necessarily reliable - people tend to overreact. You should do your own research to work out what/why/how-it-got-onto-your-machine.

Good luck.

Thinking about it, the only program i have installed was a windows live update that didnt install properly and i did a system restore.

The only other program i installed recently was drivers for my epson printer scanner and accompaning software.

With regards to messenger should i update it and risk crashing my computer or just uninstall it,

im sorry im not a technophobe but am starting to get lost seraching the net for a solution.

I dont want to waste your time so dont worry if you dont want to reply, and if anyone else can help, then thanks alot

You really don't have to apologise. It's a tech forum. Those who don't want to be here can just... not come :)

A web seach suggests that your culprit DLL is a demultiplexer, which in this context implies it was part of a codec pack:

ad2mpgdmux.dll - What is ad2mpgdmux.dll?

"ad2mpgdmux.dll is a ad2mpgdmux\r belonging to MainConcept (Adobe2)® MPEG Demuxer\r from MainConcept AG\r"

Presumably the name syntax means "Adobe to MPG demultiplexer".

A bit more light web reading leads me to conclude you probably installed XVid, and that the DLL came with that installation. Try updating the XVid pack, or removing it if updating doesn't help.

Suggestion 1: please start another thread because your problem is subtly different, even if the net result is the same - Explorer go bye-byes.

Suggestion 2: in that new thread, explain the circumstances in which this happens. Is it random or "always when you do XYZ"? Does it happen if you boot to safe mode and use the machine long enough to know whether the behaviour is different?
