Very Long Boot cycle

When I launch Vista 64 Ultimate, my harddrive light shows activity for 7 to 10 minutes.

Is this normal or do I have something turned on that I can turn off?

I run AVG antivirus, I'm going to check and see if it's doing a boot scan.

But the disk activity is something like that....for a very long time.

A check for a boot scan is a good idea. Is it 7-10 mins before it's booting, or 7-10 mins activity once your at the desktop?

If it's the latter, then it's normal. It's just Vista going through it's prefetching, indexing, pagefile swapping etc. Check the disk in resource monitor in Task manager>performance. The process will most likely be svchost.exe

the 7 to 10 minutes is after my desktop opens. This morning I opened Windows and wanted to install a new app.

I decided to create a restore point before installing the app, and restore had to wait for the hd activity to quit before opening the dialog box.

After the hd activity quits, all is well. If I log off (not reboot) and log on again, the activity is about 30 seconds.

That's normal then. 10 mins is about the Vista 'settle down time' as I mentioned in my previous post.

I beta'd Windows 7 64 and the boot cycle is less.

In fact, my beta experience with Win 7 is what made me buy Vista 64. I found out I had a 64 bit app, Photoshop CS4. And the amount of free ram I got with a 64 bit app running in a 64 bit OS was amazing. Plus, I feel 64 bit is the OS of the future.

So I upgraded.

Would have stayed with Win 7 except my chipset drivers don't support the new OS. They do in Vista 64.

There are definite benefits to x64 as you've discovered. Seven 'staggers' a lot of services at start-up which is one of the improvements over Vista in regards to boot time. However, once Vista has settled down, it's just as smooth.

Also, since it sounds like a fresh install, the indexing service is more active for the first couple of days until it sorts itself out. That too will settle down over time.

To avoid the 10 min activity, you could always try hibernating instead of shutting down. The PC is still off, but resumes much quicker.

With your chipset drivers in Seven, did you try installing them with Vista Compatibility mode?

Yes I did try compatibility mode, and still some PCI devices wouldn't load.
Didn't affect stability, just a nuisance.

I'll upgrade to Win 7 when it's release, by then Intel should have a set of drivers.
