Computer Freezes at Start-Up

I've been having a problem with my computer for the last month. When starting up it freezes at the splash screen or the windows start-up screen. I may have to restart several times before it will fully start up. I ran the Western digital utility and the hard drive failed. So I installed a new hard drive and went from XP32 to Vista64. I still does it. I ran Memtest and the RAM is fine. I bypassed the surge suppressor and it still does it. Once it's running, it's fine. Other then leaving it on all the time, any suggestions?

Cover the simple stuff first, have you installed the latest video drivers and motherboard chipset drivers?


The fact that it's happened to two OS'es points to a hardware issue.
It could be the actual sata cable itself. Do you have any spare you could try?

That's a good idea, I'll try that. If that doesn't solve it do you think it could possibly be a power supply issue where it's only effected at start up?

I swapped out the SATA cable to the hard drive.

I also disabled AMD live in setup. I believe there are conflicts with that in Vista64.

So far, it starts OK. But this problem is intermittent, so after a week or so I'll claim victory....
