External hard drive

I recently bought a Sony laptop w/ Vista home premium, and since I installed Office Pro I can't read the files on my Seagate external hard drive - the drive shows up under "computer," can bring up the files but when try to open files says "no items match you search" I know the data's there cuz the same amt. of drive is taken as before. Also - can't save to the drive anymore, get a window saying "file not found: check the file name and try again." Downloaded the service pack from Microsoft. Everything was fine w/ new computer at first, except when installed Office Pro. I have thousands of songs on the drive, all my backups - help.

Hey Conrads Ghost,

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried using another USB port?

Try doing a system restore;

If you can go back to a date b4 you installed Office Pro it should do the trick.

I hope this helps

Hi,

find the drive letter of your externet hard disk, go to elevated command prompt (run as administrator) and type these characters,

chkdsk (drive letter of removable disk): /r

In my case chkdsk i: /r my drive letter for external hard disk is i.

Let it finish the check. Then try to open it.

I also ran into this kind of problem when I installed Vista after using XP on the same extrernal HDD.
This could be a security conflict with Vista.
Simply right click on the drive, go to properties and then select the security tab. (Be sure that you are the Admin of the comp) and change the permissions of your account to full control.
If this does not work, ensure the files are not "read only" this can be changed by right clicking on the files (or ctrl+A for all at once) and unchecking the Read only option under the General tab.
