I ran the SFC and these appear to be the only files that SFC cannot repair:

CSI 00000567 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"settings.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

CSI 00000569 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"settings.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

CSI 0000056c [SR] Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:72{36}]"\??\C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar"\[l:24{12}]"settings.ini"; source file in store is also corrupted

I've read the Microsoft fix (kb929833) but the fix is greek to me - where do you get a "known good copy" of these files.

Is this a difficult fix? I really really want to avoid having to do a reinstall of Vista. My HP laptop isn't even 6 months old and Hp tells me the Vista reinstall is on the D partition of the pc.

HELP!!!!

SFC /Scannow can repair Windows files. I would recommend a backup of your data before. I have seen SFC break stuff and cause your system not to restart properly. A clean install is a better option. Backup. Reboot. Hit F11 on most computers/laptops to do a factory reinstall. It wipes everything and lays down a clean copy.
