Hi Ppl,

I want to ask how can I do a clean format on my internal laptop hdd cos the hdd is corrupted.

I tried to reinstall XP but the system scan error...

So I am thinking of doing a clean reformat on the hdd, then boot up my XP installation cd to do a clean installation.

Can someone help?

Thanks!

If you are going to dual boot Vista/XP you will have to repair the Vista boot files.

If you are talking about just removing Vista, and re-installing XP

You have to use the Vista disk/Recovery partition and boot into it like you were going to Install. At partitions screen I would just Delete all partitions so you have 1 unpartitioned space. Then take out the vista disk, replace it with XP and reboot into it. ( or you can just use the partitionng software linked above to delete and format)

On most laptops, F11 will launch the factory reinstall. It will wipe the partition clean and reinstall. You will lose everything backup first.

boot from the xp installation cd, Delete all the partitions of hdd by pressing D when the xp installation asking u to select the partition.(after pressing D u have to press L to confirm the deleting). Then create partitions as u like and format the hard disk, install the os.(do not select quick format)

good luck :)

Im not going to have dual boot. Im using vista home basic but wanted to install XP on it and remove the vista.

Tried booting the XP cd but vista blocked it from installing cos it states that XP is an older version.

So tried another way of booting the cd thru startup but after all the installation of drivers and when trying to start window, it appears an error which is 0x0000007B.

Headache!

Delphin's method will work great. I would shutdown after deleting the partition. If you have a trojan or virus in memory, it will remove it.

Did you upgrade XP to Vista? Did you have Microsoft revoke your XP key to install a Vista upgrade?

Just boot into the Paragon Partitioning boot disk to remove Vista, or use Vista to boot into installation and format Vista partition. You cant use XP to format Vista.

Yes the Vista recovery partion can be deleted- you can reformat the entire drive. (or easier yet, delete ALL partitions on the drive)

But unless you have a Vista disk with your PC you will never be able to reinstall Vista again. Perhaps you should image all hard drive partitions so that you will have it if you ever want it again:

Paragon Partitioner

This is an ISO that must be burned to disk (you can use BURNCDCC), then you just boot into the disk.

OK, roger that...

Further note-

Most newer drives are SATA, If you have sata you must load these drivers before Windows will see your hard drive and allow Installation. (you should find these on your driver/accessories disk for your pc, or you can download them from your OEM drivers website)

Hi Ppl,

Last nite I followed all the instructions and do the reformat but in the end, the problem still exist. Was exhausted last nite so went to bed.

This morning I kept thinking what causes the problem and in the end I tot this may be due to my lappy unable to support Win XP Pro.

So I went to try installing Win XP Home and it works. I can even proceed to create/delete partition.

Gosh! Going thru all the trouble, in the end is the compatibility problem.
So funny...

But still, thanks everyone for the precious information and I learnt a fair amount of IT knowledge... Thanks!
