Help with pirated copy of Vista

I need some help replacing a pirated copy of Vista Ultimate on a computer I bought on ebay. I love the computer. It exceeds all my needs so far. But after I began using it I got a notice that it was not a genuine copy of Windows and this msg: "Windows has found software that circumvents Windows activation and may interfere with its normal operation. The presence of this software may indicate your copy of Windows is counterfeit." Detected software SL08-010, Type Activation Exploit." It then told me that the repair is to install a valid copy of Windows. It also said that I should contact Dell for a new copy even though the computer is not a Dell.
What I would like to do is buy a copy of Vista Home Premium and install it over Ultimate and keeping my other files in place. (Home Premium is much cheaper that Ultimate and I don't need the business stuff)
Can anyone tell me if this will work or am I just wasting my money. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks all for help. Ted G

My suggestion would be a] was this indicated at time of bidding

b] notify the seller of this [ as if he did not know ] and ask for a refund.

c] post in comment about receiving system with bootlegged OS, which usually causes an immediate response from seller

c] notify e-bay of this situation.

Don't buy from eBay. Call Microsoft and verify that it is an illegal copy. If yes, Contact eBay and report a possible illegal software purchase. Did you pay by credit card, you can always contact them if eBay is not help.

Confirm with MS that is is a pirated OS... Microsoft will DEFNITLEY work with you in going after this guy. They will want to hang this guy from the cross.... LMAO. Message the guy, tell him to make it right by refunding you the price of a Full Retail Purchase of Windows Vista Ultimate (Take the Ultimate, dont settle for Home Premium) if he refuses, go through with microsoft, im sure they will take him to court and get your money back no problem. as well as eBay.

You cannot "upgrade" install Premium over Ultimate. Your best bet is to use vista's file backup utility, back up all your User data, then purchase Premium/Ultimate and delete all partitions and re-install Vista into unpartitioned space.

After you install Vista, download all updates, and get PC setup they way you want, image it with free paragon, and always perform weekly file backups with the Vista backup utility. This will enable you to restore Vista, and restore your User files/folders to what it was at your last weekly backup. This takes a fraction of the time required to do a Vista reinstall, and re-installation of all your programs, etc.

note-Vista Ultimate contains a Full PC backup (image) utility similiar to Paragon (but better), as well as Bitlocker encryption, Security policy editor (secpol), Group Policy editor (gpedit), shadow copy (allows you to restore deleted/altered versions of files/folders), etc.

Free Drive Backup Express - disk backup software

Further note- I buy all my Windows O/S software, and Hard drives from Newegg.com They have the best prices, and I fully recommend them.

Full Premium 32-bit OEM $99
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

Full Premium 64-bit OEM $99
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

Full Ultimate 32-bit OEM $179
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

Full Ultimate 64-bit OEM $179

One other thing, if you go to windows update it will verify if your OS is genuine or not. Some good information posted by the rest of the crew here

i beleive microsoft sell genuine vista keys.

I do not recommend keeping the current O/S install (even if you can just buy a legit Key), as more than likely the OP's current Vista install is a hacked Torrent of Vista which may be corrupted/embedded with malware, etc.

The thing is he wants to keep the computer, just wants advice on replacing the O/S.

yes that is good advice. You do at the very least want to leave feedback that your puchase came with illegal/hacked Windows Vista. You may file a complaint with ebay also, and get a refund, but keep in mind this may result in the voiding of the transaction, and futher issues.

Thanks guys (I assume you're all guys?) for the ideas. Rive, you've got it right - I just want to get the thing running OK. This computer had a combination of PCI slots and IDE connectors that let me keep some old stuff and still get a much faster machine at a real bargain price. I had a lot of exchanges with the student I bought it from straightening out an alarm caused by an odd setting in the BIOS and I think he got bad help from a friend in setting it up. Thus the Dell key on a non-Dell machine. One of the progs he had on it was a legal copy of Photoshop CS licensed thru a business friend of his but with no installation disk. I want to keep this but how if I do a clean install of Vista? That's why I asked about installing Premium over Ultimate.

I hate to tell ya Ted but the Copy of Photoshop CS is not legal either. I'm sure it violates his license to have a copy on your computer which is not one of his business computers.

I HIGHLY doubt the kid told you a legit story.. if the OS is a pirated OS...what makes you think that Photoshop installation is not either? "Business Friend"
