Hard Drive problems with Vista

Hello to all,

I have been using Windows XP professional and have recently decided to upgrade to Vista - 64x Ultimate. My pc has been a bit of a build in progress and before i upgraded i made the fatal mistake of buying a HDD of trademe.co.nz now the pic in the auction was Sata however the wording said IDE - i should learn to read . I managed to get them all running fine with XP, however now that ive upgraded to Vista its decided that it does not want to recognise the IDE drive, there is only the one hard drive on the IDE cable, as even my DVD drive is Sata.. Now the Bios is set to AHCI (as a tech friend told me thats what it should be) ive had a bit of a play with the bios but to no avail..

Now the wierd thing is this - it does not show up in Disk Managment, device manager, anything however bios recognises it as normal. SOMETIMES however.. it does show up, is even viewable.. other times it will pop up saying that the disk needs to be formatted for it to work.

I have had a few other misc problems that may have something to do with it - sometimes, when the pc is cold (morning starts) the bios seems to forget everything and reset itself, eg i have the fans set so they automatically adjust to the temp - keeps it nice and quiet, however it will boot and they will be full noise till i reset the bios, also since ive upgraded to vista the pc will randomly restart every now and again.. i had it do it once with XP but since ive upgraded to Vista its done it maybe three or four times.. (and yes i have replaced the bios battey)

The main problem i need to sort out is the HDD issue - all my music, pics, etc etc are on there and i need them, however if anyone can put it all down to one thing (PSU too small?) that would be great,

Thank you all in advance :) pc specs are listed below

ok, that was not the case, looks like everytime the pc decided to stop recognising the IDE, it crashes, but not the other way round, for instance thismorning pc booted fine, no problems what so ever. showed all hdd's incl my IDE, then just before this post, it crashed, reboot - no show of drive. and it was a proper restart, normally if theres a fault with the power it just dies and you have to press the button to restart. it doesnt do that with this..
