System Profile Error - Windows Vista

Hi,
I also got the same problem as GoingMyWay:

http://www.vistax64.com/general-dis...c-system-restore-doesnt-help-any-boffins.html

It was my cousins' computer. I was just doing my regular inspection and updating some programs and it just crashed.

After it crashed and restarted, I logged on to my account and then all the programs
were all missing and the Recycle Bin was the only one left.
The taskbar changed into a Windows 2000 taskbar.

The same error also occurred.
Good thing I was logged into a sub-admin account and I tried logging in with the
main admin account and the other apps and programs were there.
But the windows vista themes were gone.

Wallpaper is black, the taskbar is like the one in Windows 2000, the sidebar was in an error or something which are the same with the problem in my account except for error and the other apps are missing.

Please reply and help me with this problem.
Thank You.

You may have a Virus/malware and it is corrupting Windows, and may result in corruption/loss of data.

I suggest you download and scan with these:
Free Antivirus Download from ESET
Malwarebytes.org

Then repair Windows (and turn off system restore/then turn it back on to delete all restores that may have backed up malware)
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Run Defender (full scan)
start> in search type defender>click the program

read this regarding Eset NOD32:

I'll ask my cousin to do as what you have suggested and see if it works.
I'm also hoping that they can access windows defender for some of the windows components are not working properly.

I was wondering and thinking if I can backup the files and reinstall Windows Vista.
Can I use the COA on the CPU again if I reinstall Vista?

Yes itll work with the version it is for- If it is a Basic key, it will activate Vista Basic.

In that case, can you provide a proper way to backup the files and to re-install vista.
I don't have that much knowledge in making backup files and recovery discs. :D

Thanks,
Mark

I would just copy the User(s) folder to a dvd/external. I suspect File backup will not be functional. Do you have a vista disk or recovery partition?

You mean a separate disk on the computer right?
The computer doesn't have any recovery partition disk.
This is one of the main problems I found on it.

My Computer

Back up the folders/files to cd/dvd, and then insert Vista dvd, restart, hit any key to boot off disk, and then delete existing partitions and reinstall Vista.

Ok,
I can use the Full Windows Vista Home Basic Installer, right?
And about the reinstallation, I can use the COA on the CPU as long as the windows OS are the same?
