Cascade of issues on new laptop

Install Wizard, System Restore, and File Backup all freeze

I'm 3 weeks or so into my new laptop. I used Move My PC to migrate my older XP 32 bit laptop to my new Vista 64 bit machine. Everything seemed to transfer pretty well. I ran into an issue that wasn't that big of a deal but in trying to fix it I've found several other troubling issues - thus the length of the post.

The first issue I encountered was trying to install an upgrade from Palm - their desktop 6.2, so I could sync my Treo again. The download was fine, setup went through asking the usual questions of install type, language, etc. On the final "Install" click the InstallShield Wizard opens the Installing Programs page and then hangs with no progress. I redownloaded the program, same issue. The palm forum moderator thought I should download and run Windows Installer Clean Up, I did and ran into the same problem of the Installer freezing - figuring it was no longer a Palm problem I thought I would do a System Restore. I had been able to download and install several other programs in the past few weeks. I have also been able to download and install some programs since these issues.

I went to do my first System Restore, something I was familiar with from my XP system. When I click on the System Restore option nothing appeared to happen. I went to My Computer > System Protection and on the System Protection page System Resotre is greyed out and it says it is searching for available disks but nothing is progressing. I could not do System Restore in Safe Mode or through the Recovery Console.

Now thinknig I have some sort of virus I do scans with PC Security Shield, and then Spydoctor. I also do deep registry scans and repair what comes up. I take care of any issues that appeared but none seemed too serious. I downloaded and ran Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool and it didn't find anything wrong. I did the ScanDisk, disk repair, and Check Files tools and Chkfiles said there were some corrupt files that it could not repair - a search of forums found this happened fairly regularly. I do have the large report but don't know what to look for in it.

I figured I would just backup my files and do a System Recovery to start over - maybe things didn't go as smooth as I thought in the migration. When trying to do a backup either through the Vista Backup and Restore utility or through PCTools Disk Suite, I ran into the process freezeing on the creating Volume Shadow Copy step. It would start and then freeze about 20% in.

I now am not sure if I have a Vista problem, a migration problem, or a Virus problem and not sure just what to do next - manually back up what I can and then reinstall Vista? I thought this forum would be more help then HP Support but I'll try that next I guess.

Any ideas?

Thanks
