Losing disk space

Hi, I recently installed Vista Ultimate x64. I have a 29GB partition for Vista right now.

First it was only 20GB and I had 3.5GB free space, the next day I was down to 230MB so I re sized my partition and increased it to 29GB, it showed I had 6.9GB. This morning, it shows I have 1.3GB left. So in 2 days, I lost about 12GB of space.

From properties it shows I have used 17.5GB. I ran TreeSize and it shows a weird folder in my C drive that has the other 12GB. I can't open the folder, gives me error: C:\ Class not registered. It doesn't even have a folder icon. See photo of TreeSize for what I mean. ">

Re: Losing disk space

Hello Corrin,

It may System Restore using this space for restore points. You might check to see what the maximum disk space usage is set at, and adjust if needed.

System Restore - disk space

Hope this helps,

Re: Losing disk space

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the reply. I dont' think its the system restore points. Yesterday when I checked, I had zero restore points. I just did the vssadmin commond and resized it to 2GB and its still the same.

Hi Corinn,

29gig is a bit on the small size for Vista x64, so I would see this as normal the missing space is probably down to the page file.

Re: Losing disk space

Hi Corinn,

You might try running the Disk Analysis module of the free

Glary Utilities

Select the drive to scan, e.g. C - it takes a few seconds.

Click on the Files folder and you can see exactly what is there:

Re: Losing disk space

Hi SIW2,

I see that [File] folder in your picture, that makes me feel a bit better. I'll use Glary Utilities when get I home tonight. Hopefully I will be able to open the folder like you had in the 2nd picture and see what is in it. My [File] has only 3 files, at around 4.2GB each.

@Pooch,

Yet 29GB isn't much for Vista, but its more than enough if its on its own partition. Most people recommend 20GB. I have all my other programs on my 2nd partition that has 120GB.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions everyone.

Re: Losing disk space

Hi SIW2,

Got the program and scan the disk. It seems like pagefile.sys and hibefil.sys is take 6GB each. Is there anyway to reduce those numbers?

Re: Losing disk space

How much Ram have you got?

Windows will adjust the size according to the amount of Ram you have.

If you don't use Hibernation , you can turn it off - if you really need the space.

Re: Losing disk space

Corrin,

You can read more about the page file hear. I would recommend to leave it set as system managed though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
