| Vista Home Premium 64bit | System Restore lags My System Restore takes nearly a half hour to open (in Vista Home Premium)!!! After a fresh boot, when I try to open "System Restore", I click OK for the standard “Windows needs your permission to continue” message – but then nothing happens. If I attempt to open it again, I get a message that says "The System Restore wizard is already running. This program will now exit." However, System Restore is NOT running – not visibly, & not according to the Task Manager. This occurs whether I try to open System Restore from the Start menu, from any of the prompts in Help & Support, from Windows Security Center>System & Maintenance>Backup & Restore Center, or by double-clicking directly on rstui.exe in System32. I spent quite some time trying to find an online answer to this problem. Nearly a full half hour after I had originally attempted to open System Restore, the wizard finally came up… What the h#*^??? Is this normal? By that, I mean: Is this how Vista intends for System Restore to work? |

| Vista Ultimate X64 SP2 | Re: System Restore lags It is normal as it compiles all the restoration points. takes a few minutes. it also depends on the RAM installed and the frag or errors in the file system. All this will slow a pc drastically. try this: How To Make Vista more responsive and faster |

| Vista Home Premium 64bit | Re: System Restore lags I can’t agree with your assessment of the “normality” of System Restore’s lag: 30 minutes just to open seems quite unreasonable! However… I followed the steps in the Tutorial, & it did make a considerable difference. After doing so, the time it took System Restore to open went from 30 to 3 minutes. I hadn’t expected as substantial an improvement. I run the default defragmenter regularly, but apparently consolidating all file fragments regardless of their size via the Command Prompt is something else altogether. FYI, in case anyone reading this wants to try it: I couldn’t access the necessary Admin. level Command Prompt in the manner described in the Tutorial - but I was able to by using these steps: START button Type the words “Command Prompt” in the SEARCH box PROGRAMS > COMMAND PROMPT will appear Right click on COMMAND PROMPT Select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR It took just over an hour for me to defrag in this manner. Also, I hadn’t known you could run a Disk Check in Vista. It’s unfortunate that Vista hides these functions – but I’m glad that Tutorial showed the way. Thanks for your advice!!! |
