Hi there

I'm not very good with computers so excuse me if I use incorrect terminology.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR498D which I purchase in September 2008.

Ten days ago my computer froze so I switched it off. When I tried switching it on again it took unusually long to load and would go through a process where it was going through some files and have a percentage of how much was done. When Vista loaded, it would frequently freeze of programs would be "(Not responding)". It was like this for a few days and got worse and worse.

7 days after it started, my friend tried to fix it but the problem was I had Ubuntu as well so there was something wrong with the partitioning and thus it was difficult for him to find the recovery partition. This is what I understood at least.

He took it home because he said he needed to use his own computer to fix it. I didnt quite understand the details but anyway the next day he brought it back and it still took along time to start up and programs would still 'not respond' from time to time but it was much better than before. It went on like this for a few days.

Last night the computer tried installing updates when I shut it down. When I switched it on this morning, on the screen it said:

Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

Status: 0cx00000e9

File: /Windows/System 32/config/system

I called Sony and they said I had to buy a system recovery disk.

My questions are what is the problem and how can I fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I found this in the Vista Forums Archives.

Could be, did you try booting from the Vista DVD, and choose Repair PC > and
from the System Repair Options > run the Startup Repair option?
I'd run a drive diagnostic tool from the manufacturer, Gary, to rule that in
or out. I'd also run a memory check (the one that's in Vista isn't too bad,
but I still prefer one that runs from outside the OS on bootable media).
I hope this will help.
