Wonderful but wierd

Greetings All,

If this has already been asked, please forgive me ...

I bought a P5Q SE/R motherboard to run Vista 64 bit with 8G of memory plus plus etc to build a machine to edit High Density video.

Initially the installation of Vista Home Premium 64 bit went well enough and the performance of the machine, without any sort of overclocking, was blistering (5.9 on the Windows Experience Index - cpu, disk, memory and video). Then, I started the upgrade to Vista SP1 and things began to go wrong. As I write, I am attempting to re-install Vista to get back to where I was but without much sign of success.

The SATA disk passed the Seagate DOS Tools tests but Vista, having asked for the Language (English UK) is sitting there with a very pretty screen and the legend "Please wait ..." displayed.

It seems very strange that the machine should have gone through about a Gigabyte of windows upgrades andn then fail as or after SP1 was being processed. Has any one else had seen this or similar problems and can spare the time to tell me about a solution.

Some clues would be appreciated; for example:
what is the vista installer waiting for?
how can I get in to the process to, if all else fails, blow the partition away and start clean?

Any advice and guidance welcome

Roger

Hi Roger, Welcome to the Forum.

I think if you are having trouble with SP1 your best option might be to try a Vista SP1 Slipstream DVD Have a look here for details; http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html

In answer to your question yes a lot of people have trouble installing SP1, the causes are varying. One of the best answers is the Slipstream method

I hope this helps

Thank you very much for the reply. I have not yet had time to investigate the answer but I am very encouraged to hear difficulties with SP1 is not just my experience.

The machine I was building was a production machine rather than a general purpose beast and accordingly, I expect to have to rebuild it from time to time. That might be the appropriate time to look at the slipstream method.

Many thanks for the guidance.
