Black Screen Problem

I'm having a problem with Windows Vista Home Premium, whenever I go to select a profile "Administrator" or "AL".

AL gives me a black screen with an error message "Windows Explorer has encountered and error and had to close", it also says "Host Process has encountered and error and needs to close", after opening Task Manager. If I try to open explorer.exe through Task Manager, it stops working, and I can't get anything else working either it just has the same problem.

The only process running are:
csrss.exe "System"
dwm.exe "AL"
taskeng.exe "AL"
taskmgr.exe "AL"
winlogon.exe "System"

Safe Mode also has the same problem.
I can only get into Repair Your Computer

Administrator has a blue screen problem ( i activated the account yesterday hoping i could fix the problem) it also has the Windows Explorer has stopped working and so on.

A few weeks before I had a blue screen with the account AL, but I had the Documents then, then a few days later I restored the desktop by going into the registry and fixing the problem, it worked fine, but know i have this Black Screen problem.

I would really like some help with this problem.

Explorer crash: if you run WERCON, then check the "problem history" link on the left hand side, there should be multiple entries in that list corresponding to your Explorer crashes. Paste that "appcrash" data here and someone might be able to help.

BSOD: No reason to assume (yet) that it's linked. The \windows\minidump folder may contain DMP files which can be helpful in determining the cause of each BSoD. If you copy a few of those dumps elsewhere, then zip them up and upload here, someone will take a look at them.

Hmm, so you're saying everything you've tested crashes except for those few processes you listed? (Reading your description a bit more closely, that seems to be exactly what you're saying :( )

I take it you already ran a repair and it didn't help?

What exactly is this registry fix you performed?

Yes I've tried everything, well depends on what you mean by anything, but anyway, and i did try the computer repair and that didn't work either i got the fix from this site

http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/mi...tenance/75822-no-desktop-taskbar-startup.html

and it said to do this:

For starters, check this key in the Registry Editor
:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane, make sure there is a REG_SZ Type with a value Name
"Shell" (no quotation marks) that has value Data "explorer.exe" (no
quotation marks).

I did this, and i worked until now

That dump says the BSoD was almost certainly caused by this driver:

Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\Apfiltr.sys
Image name: Apfiltr.sys
Timestamp: Sat Sep 29 20:07:59 2007 (46FE23FF)

Looks like something to do with the touchpad. The driver is ancient, so you could try to update it (or remove it), but I doubt it's got anything to do with your inability to run any but a few processes.

In your situation, I'd probably try to back up my data as much as possible and then run a Windows reinstall over the top of the current installation. In theory, you won't lose any settings, but if the problem is one of configuration rather than corruption, that may not fix it either.
