Vista 64bit

So im going to be putting another 4 gigs of ram into my machine when I get my new motherboard. I am going to need to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 32bit to Vista Ultimate 64bit. I know there's no native support to just upgrade, so I was wondering if someone knew the easiest way to do this. I especially don't want to have to reinstall my programs and games, so is it possible just to back up my program files and copy them into the new program files folder? Also, is there any way to transfer the registry information? I know the registry's won't be compatible, but is there some sort of 32 to 64 conversion method? Thanks

Hi G, Welcome to the Forum.

There probably are ways to do what you want. My advice though is to install all programs new, you will have a lot less problems this way,

Music, Film files etc that are not installed could just be copied over

If you want to test x64 first, why not try dual booting, should any game not work with X64 you would still be able to play on x86.

I hope this helps

So if i am dual booting, I will need to install all of the programs I want to run in both twice right? There's no way to access say Vista 32 programs while running the 64bit dual boot because they will look for the programs in drive C, while they will be installed in a drive with a different letter than C. Am I correct?

Thanks

It would probably be best to install everything twice yes, as this would reduce the chance of you accidently corrupting the other OS. This also applies to accessing the programs of one OS from the other it may well prove possible, to some degree but again you are running the same corruption risk.

I have never dual booted Vista/Vista, so I cant say for certain, My set up is Vista/7 and both OS's are installed on drive C:\ as seen from within each OS. In reality they are installed on Drives C:\ and D:\ This will become clearer when you dual boot.

To make this clearer you will have two of everything; A drive C:\ for each OS, each OS will have its own registry and for example both will have its own Program Files were programs are installed

Ok, I have another thread going on the Windows 7 forum cause I was deciding if I should just go with Windows 7 64bit rather than Vista 64. I think Im going to install 7 64bit and then see if any of my programs need to be run in Vista. If not I'm not going to worry about dual booting, but all my programs should work in 64 bit right? Doesn't 64 bit have some sort of 32bit emulator type thing so it can run 32bit programs? I probably don't have enough space to triple boot If I needed 32bit for some reason.

The 32bit applications will work on Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 without problem. Just remember to install them into the Program Files x86 folder on C: drive. You will find two folders, the Program Files for 64bit apps and the Program Files x86 for 32bit apps over there.

Hope I could help...cheers...

Wait, so when I set up 64bit it will set up two program files? One for 32bit apps and one for 64 bit apps? Thats very interesting, I did not know. Thanks for the help everybody. Wish me luck on my entrance into the 64bit scene
