Building My Own Computer

Hey everyone. I'm going to build my own computer and want to know what you all think about this so far.

Processor: Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor - Processors - Desktops

Motherboard: GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-MA790GP-DS4H (rev. 1.0)

Graphics Card: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100269SR Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Then all the other stuff of course. But is this good and can this play Crysis with the settings on high? I'm getting 8 gigs of ram.

I don't know about all of the other things, but what I've read through other forums, 8 gigs of RAM is pretty useless. You should be good with 4 gigs. Might save you some money.

Not knowing much about AMD & ATI, I can't help but, I can chime in in what I have heard about RAM.

2 to 3 GB's of RAM is more than Enough if running XP OS
4 GB is more than adequate if running Vista 32bit
8GB of Ram is ok for Vista x64 only if doing some Heavy Gaming or Video Editing like Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc, etc., otherwise... waste of time and money.

I have also heard that some Motherboards don't like it when you fill the 4 ram slots so might as well go for 2 x 2GB sticks.

It seems like a good start , but why are you going ATI and AMD? Just curious as to what research you have done , at the end of the day its hard earned cash yuor spending you want it to be perfect , everyone has their own ideas as to what they want , personally i think you get better performance from an Intel CPU and ive had that many people complain about ATI's flagship GPU's i wouldnt touch one with yours ;) Issues like flickering textures , white pixels around allaised objects , i could go on and on

Dont get me wrong im not knocking your choices mate but you did ask ;)

AstaLaVista about the four slot thing , i have heard about the interweb that that particular AMD chipset can be a bit troublesome when the ram slots are all full

I had 8 gB with Vista Ultimate x64, and I have 12 gB with Windows 7 x64.
It's a waste of your money if you're not going to use all of it. A web browser, and email client, and a game won't use anywhere near 8 gB.

My situation is a bit different, as I insist upon keeping all of my memory eating programs running while I play games - and I still haven't used up all of the 8 gB. I went with 12 gB this time because I didn't want to limit myself to 6 (DDR3 RAM).

One of the big questions is what are you planning to use the desktop for. Depending on your OS (XP, Vista, Win7), and other assorted programs use and/or keep open while playing games will determine if what you have is enough. I am running intel i7 920 with 6gb ram and a GTX 285 Card. I also run Ansys and Wildfire 4 (Engineering Programs) which eat up a ton of ram to do the different calculations. So you might have a bit of overkill but we all love more power!!! lol As far as playing Crysis, you shouldn't have any issues.

Click on my system specs to see what I just built. Aside from the first P5Q being bad and having to return it for another one, this build came together nicely and is very stable. Cost came in right around $900.00 and will run Crysis at high settings and everything stays cool. No overclocking needed.

I did a lot of research looking at benchmark comparisons of Intel and AMD processors and IMHO the intel CPU's edge out the AMD's for performance, value and quality. The ATI video cards are also my favorites. Ive been running a 9800 Pro for many years with no problems. The 4800 series cards are sweet.

Have fun with your build.
