Two Vista annoyances...

I'd like to thank everyone for their answers on my other thread. I have a couple more annoyances I'd like to ask for help on...

First, it appears as though my webcam (a Logitech QuickCam Communications Deluxe) is crashing my MSN whenever I try to use it. I'm unsure why, honestly, and it's incredibly annoying.

As a sort of aside: how come the Task Manager doesn't actually close a program/process/task when I tell it to? It seems like it thinks about it for a while then decides it knows more than I do. Very frustrating.

Second, my machine hangs on restarts and shutdowns for some reason. I don't know why it does it because it seems to happen at random intervals. Is there some reason why this would be happening? XP was able to shut down without a problem so it stands to reason that Vista would be able to do that, too. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance, everyone! :D

1) Try to update the Logitech webcam software and driver.

2) Task Manager behaviour is different on the "applications" and "processes" tabs. If you try to "End Task" on the apps tab, TM is actually nice to the app in the sense that it first sends WM_CLOSE messages - it's as if someone clicked the X in the upper right hand corner or the app's window to close it. Whether the app responds to the "close" command or not depends on many factors. On the processes tab, TM uses TerminateProcess() which is far more direct. Still, there are some processes which cannot be directly ended that way either (not without SeDebugPrivilege). Short version = it depends what you're doing in TM.

3) Your startup/shutdown problem is not directly caused by Vista. Otherwise, everyone on this forum running Vista would experience the same symptom, and yet the vast majority don't. Try testing whether the machine hangs on shutdown/restart even in safe mode. If not, you could use MSCONFIG to troubleshoot further.

In addidtion to what has been mentioned if you click on the start manager then right click on my computer, select manage. You now have access to a number of handy tools to tell you what has been going on.
Your performance and reliability will tell you if anything critical has happened,
look in the error logs to see if there is anything causeing the problems you describe.

Awesome. Thanks for the replies, guys.

A couple more things:

1. I have the latest Logitech drivers (v 11.5), which is why I'm so confused about the webcam's behavior.

2. Good to know about Task Manager; I didn't know most of that. Usually, I open Task Manager and try to end the task first (i.e. shut down the program). If that fails, I'll end the process. That said, it was Itunes that prompted me to post that part. I'm not sure why Itunes would be so stupid, other than it's Apple. :-)

3. I'll test that out. I'll post the results here. Is there anything specific in MSCONFIG I should be looking for? That is, what could cause such a hang?

New drivers don't always fix problems. In some cases they can cause more trouble than they fix. (I'm not saying that's the case here)

As for MSCONFIG, start by un-ticking any apple and logitech entries to see if it helps. You could also disable all items if you wish, but that would obvioulsy prevent apps from loading at start up, however most of the time it does not prevent them from running.

I agree with what you're saying about drivers. But I need 64-bit drivers and I'm not sure if Logitech has older versions available. I could always use my install CD and use the XP drivers. They might work but I figured I'd need 64-bit drivers with a 64-bit OS.

I disabled the Apple stuff but then Itunes came up with something weird and said it wasn't installed correctly. Maybe it was just being fussy. I suppose I could try it again, though I'd have to reinstall Itunes if it fails (which is annoying and I've done it twice already, haha). I'll give it another whirl, though, and let you know how it turns out.

There is one Logitech app I want starting up with the system - my G15 keyboard.

Thanks for the reply, btw!

The G15 should be fine to load at start up.

iTunes is a fussy PITA :) If the machine still hung with most of those apps disabled at start up, then it's a fair chance the issue is elsewhere and is therefore safe to re-enable them. Perhaps try starting up and shutting down with the webcam physically disconnected to see if that helps.
