Vista Permissions... at my wits end

OK, it seems that I have managed to lock myself into a corner here and I am hoping some of you gents can pull me out w/o loosing any body limbs :D

I have a very special folder, within that folder I have a few files and, until recently, they were working.

I decided to try a script to hide the folder so nobody could get to it. After a new build, the script did not work anymore so I decide not to bother with it anymore. the problem is that now that I want to move the folder to my external passport drive, I am getting the following 2 permission pop ups and I can't, for the life of me, make this happen.

I have tried turning the UAC off, tried elevating myself to the highest, I have taken ownership of the folder and the Drive where the folder resides, I have also given me full access of the folder and the files and still, I am getting the dreaded errors.

Before attempting to open my case and take the drive out to be used as an external usb/sata drive on my XP laptop in hopes that this will allow me to get it (I am thinking it won't), I will like to see if you guys can suggest anything else.

I googled this to no avail and I even tried a few things that were suggested on other websites (I did this so I wouldn't be bothering you guys so much :o) but, as you can see... I am back!!! :p

I am up for any suggestion you may want to give me so, don't be afraid to say the first thing that pops in your head ;)

As you can see, when I first attempt to send the file to my other drive, I get the first pop-up, I click on Continue and then, I get prompted with the following pop-up and hitting "Try Again" once or multiple times does nothing.

Hi,

Try moving it with something that ignores Windows.

D/L this from the nice people at Paragon - it burns itself to a cd - boot the cd, select File Transfer Wizard - there you go.

Thanks a lot, I will try that tomorrow, although, I still would love to know how to do it within vista.

Given that the error seems to suggest a permissions issue on the destination directory, have you looked into that? Are you able to copy this (source) folder or its contents elsewhere - other than the intended target drive? If so, that reinforces the notion that destination permissions are the obstacle.

The command-line CACLS tool can provide insight into the current ACL (access control list) for any NTFS drive or object:

C:\>cacls w:
W:\ BUILTIN\Administrators:F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:C
NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(OI)(CI)(IO)C
BUILTIN\Users:R
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)(IO)(special access:)

GENERIC_EXECUTE

How did you know that the error suggest a problem at the destination? I mean, it doesn't really matter, just want to know and now that you mention it, it makes more sense since the WD passport is not NTFS but since Vista was able to read it, I never thought I was going to have any problems with it. Besides, it was not going to be the first time I moved files from my Vista Drive to it so I didn't even consider it.

Now, I have no clue or idea what to do with this one... it did make me sad though. :(

Care to waste a little more time and explain it to me? I promise to follow instructions and even though I am not a Guru, I have been told that I learn extremely quick :D

The title of those two dialogs (which you posted as screenshots) is "destination folder access denied". I'm not sure, but that might be indicative of some type of permissions issue with the portable drive. In other words, the problem is not copying from the source - its committing to the destination that fails.

CACLS is a useful utility for listing the permissions on any given object, but let's perhaps set that aside for now.

Are you able to copy some or all of the contents of the source folder to elsewhere on the same drive? In other words, if the source is say C:\MyStuff\Videos\Oldies, are you able to copy the contents to C:\Testing\1\2\?

Ahhhhhh, ok. Yes, I can see how you would think that.

Now, I don't know if this is relevant or not but I should have also stated that I also can't watch the avi file even if I open it on the drive it resides now. I have tried opeing it with VLC (you know it plays almost everything and even corrupt files).

The file seems to be in some sort of "Lock" state.

Okee Dokee.

Well, I don't know, I didn't try moving the file to another folder within the same drive, I will try that later on when I get home. I did, however, "Rename" the folder where the files reside w/o a problem. I was even able to rename one of the files within the folder but was never able to move it to the external passport.

Now, like I stated before, I was able to move other files to the external passport w/o problems.

OK, I can do anything I want to the files (rename, move) as long as I do so within the drive they reside now.

I have found out why but, for the life of me, I don't know how or why they became like this. All I can think of it that when I was using this drive as the primary drive, it created some sort of ownership to it and now that I am using it as a back-up type of drive (secondary) the ownership is still there... see attached image.

The kicker is that I must disable this ownership to each and every one of them files, I can't do it in a batch-type option. In the end, it will work out.

Never mind, I was able to take ownership of the full folder. this is very extrange as I thought I had already done that before. sorry to say that I can't be more specific on what I did since I tried a ton of different things and I know full well it won't help others much.
