My Vista version of a multiple organ failure! :(

Sorry, I have no idea which category in the forums this post should go!

So I've been having these random hibernation problems for a while now, but last week, it got REALLY bad. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2500 and I left it on to download something and then accidentally fell asleep myself. When woke up the next morning found out the thing had hibernated on me again.

Well, nothing unusual there as I have this problem frequently, except this time, it couldn't resume windows - kept on getting stuck at this black screen during boot with this flashing horizontal cursor in the corner of the screen. After another attempt at resuming (after manually shutting it down and opening it again) I told it to cancel resume and just start windows normally.

And that's when I noticed a myriad of symptoms! It took an AGE for me to log in, and when I finally did, I got a couple of messages, one from Norton saying it couldn't scan my email anymore and another general little windows speech bubble that said:

'Failed to connect to a windows service - windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. The problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you and review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.'

When I try to look at the Event Viewer through the device manager thing, I get this message:

'Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running.'

Probably one of the most shocking things was to find that windows help and support didn't work either:

'Help and Support was not able to start - for more info, contact.... (etc etc etc)'

Even worse than that, the internet is now unrecognisable all of a sudden:

'Connection status unknown - the dependency service or group failed to start'

Tried to run sfc/scannow on cmd, didn't find any problems.

Restarting does not fix the problem.

Upon looking at the system restore options I saw that sometime in the middle of the night, it did an automatic Windows update which I thought might have been the problem, but restore has never worked for me and this time was no different, even when I tried it in safe mode I still got the same 'there was a problem' and 'no files and settings were changed' notice.

SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE!! I can't even go online - I'm posting this through my phone on Opera Mini!

...Hello? Anyone there? I'd really appreciate some help on this!

If no else has had this problem, is it due to some kind of hardware malfunction or something?

Hi,

You seem to have had some serious problems with Hibernation and System Restore for quite a while.

One option would be to restore your machine to how you received it, either from the recovery partition , or recovery discs.

Normally they give the option to save the contents of the partition.

HP Notebook PCs -  Using HP Backup and Recovery Manager

Hope it helps

Thanks a lot! That helped a ton! Been wanting to restore it to factory settings but never knew where the option was!

Seems to be normal now, though it'll take a while to download all those updates again...

Once you have downloaded the updates do a backup of the updates to dvd.
This way if you need to reset the computer to factory defaults it will only be a matter of putting the dvd back onto your laptop instead of downloading all the updates.
