explorer.exe not showing up on start up

Can anyone direct me how to enable explorer.exe on start up??
I can run it through task manager but still can anyone direct me how to enable it so that it starts up automatically?? thanks

It's probably starting and then crashing for some reason. If you run WERCON, check the "problem history" link on the left, find the Explorer crashes, and then paste that "appcrash" data here, it may be possible to help you further.

No no thats not the problem it just doesn't start up automatically but i can run it through the task manager without any problems and it doesn't crash too. I just want to know how to make it start automatically

Go to the vista start orb and type in the search bar regedit then hit enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon

In the right pane there is Shell. The value of it must be explorer.exe . If its different set it to explorer.exe then reboot.

Thanks a million it turned out to work fine....but documents folder is showing up on start up. How do you disable it? It used to show up before too

No problem :). When that happens its normally because you did a hard reset by using the power button on your pc case. Did you do this before the initial explorer problem occured?

Unfortunately i dont know how to fix this :(

You could try going back into the registry and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon

In the right pane there should be C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
Anything past this or double, delete, and exit the registry editor then reboot.

Yeah there is only C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
should the "," symbol actually be there?

Sorry i did say i didnt know how to fix that problem lol. Maybe someone else here knows and can help.

I dont think it'll be this but go to:

Computer\Organize\Folder and Search Options
Select VIEW tab, uncheck RESTORE PREVIOUS FOLDER WINDOWS AT LOGON and reboot.

You could try checking that box, clicking apply, OK then reboot. Then go back there and uncheck the box, click apply, OK and rebooting and see if that works. But honestly i dont know :huh:

OK if that doesnt work. The navigate to regedit again and look for these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

If you can immediately see whats causing it then deleate that entry, if not take a screenshot of those entries and post them here.

Also go to msconfig start up and uncheck everything except firewall/AV

In the second screenshot theres an Explorer entry.

Right click on it and then select delete and reboot your pc. That should fix your problem :)
