recovering a reformatted hd

im trying to recover from a hd that was reformatted and had vista reinstalled on it... nothing else has been done to it.

can someone help me please. do i need to scan it from another computer? if so how do i connect them so that the second computer will see the laptop as an hd?

You could use a bootable live cd to recover the data or partitions, i would recommend Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT), download it and burn the iso image to a cd, then boot up from the cd.

i tried it but when i scaned the deleted files just stuff from the current partition came up... anything else i could try.

the disk was messed up two nights ago and vista was reinstalled yesterday. i need mainly picture files back from two nights ago before it was repartitioned and reinstalled

I could recover data from my hdd after i formatted it and installed vista, tho not much of it and many of the pictures were corrupt. If i were you, i would boot up some good boot cd like Hiren's Boot CD, Ultimate boot cd, or DaRT and run a deep scan on the drive with a recovery tool (it takes some time).

i have MSDaRT... where is the deep scan option?

Sorry, i took a better look at the recovery tool in MSDaRT and there seem to be only a simple scan option, you should try Hiren's Boot CD, it has several recovery utilities that have a deep sector for sector scan option. The easiest one (in my opinion) is Recuva, and it has a deep scan option :)
