Vista-64 will not recognize new Canon camera

I can plug my Canon camera into my two XP computers and the one at work, and they all instanly see the camera and the pictures.

Not my Vista-64. It never opens. Is there some trick in Vista-64 to see USB camera devices? It can instantly see all other USB devices, and I have many. It's only the camera that won't open.

Does the camera show up in device manager, or an Unknown Device?
You might wanna try to install the drivers from Canon's website: Official Canon Drivers and Software

No, it does not show anywhere, as camera or unknown. My other three computers do not have any Canon software, and they all pop open the camera file about 3 seconds after turning it on.

I've never had the need to use camera software, as Windows XP does it better.

Download the correct driver for your camera model and install it, reboot your machine and plug the camera in, let me know the result :)
If you are sure its not a driver problem, try other USB ports and reboot the machine with the camera plugged in.

Thanks, I'm due for a MS update and reboot anyway. I hesitate on the canon drivers because the BIGGEST problems I've had with Vista is installing drivers or s/w.

1: installed the latest HP printer drivers for 64 bit Vista. Total crash, non-recoverable, had to reinstall vista. Scorched earth, lost everything.

2: installed drivers for another USB device, a 6-way USB switch, total crash, but did spend enough hours to recover.

3: installed ZA that boasts Vista on their site, total crash, and spend more hours in safemode killing every trace of ZA. Nasty mail to ZA returne this: "Sorry about that. Our site does say for Vista, but we meant 32 bit, not 64."

I think ZA finally has a 64 bit version, but I am not going through that again.

If it comes to drivers, I will just use my XP computer for pictures.

Admin, please close ticket.

I gave up.

Rebooted over and over, changed cables, changed USB ports, tried 'new hardware', etc, wasted another two hours.

Connected camera to old XP and finished the pics in two minutes. Not worth any more effort.

I'm having exactly the same problem. A few things, there are NO x64 vista drivers at the Canon website. From my research, Canon PowerShot supports PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) which do not require additional drivers or software.

So, the approach is to attempt repair on the windows vista....which is likely plunging into the registry.

I have a Canon Camera. Why bother hooking it up. Take out the SD card and put it in the computers SD slot. At this point you can do what you like with the pictures on the SD card. This is how I handled it. What is funny though, my folks 32 bit Vista recognizes the camera and loads pictures to the Vista picture file.

Yes, that works...a little inconvenient however. I'm trying to fix the problem so my wife can easily use the Canon software to download pictures. I'm sure there's a solution via registry editing.

I do not find it anymore inconvenient than opening the cover to plug in one end of cord and then plugging it into the computer. Open hatch pull SD card, load SD card into slot on computer. If it is more than a registry edit at least you can still get your pictures this way and all is not lost;)
