Is 32bit going away?

I have been talking to some local "techies" who are saying that in the very near future we are only going to be able to purchase the 64bit versions of MS products. I some how find this a little hard to beleive as there are still a lot apps. out there that are 32bit only. Has any one here heard of a push by MS to move everything strictly to 64bit.

It'll take atleast more 5 yrs to completely move to 64 bit.

Hello Sapper,

Welcome to the Vista Forums.

MS had originally said that Win 7 would only be 64 bit, but then they backed off from that. But yes 32 bit will eventually disappear as did 8 bit and 16 bit. I have no problem running 32 bit programs in 64 bit OS, though. Really hope it doesn't take 5 years.

Hope this helps and hope you enjoy the forums.

Now that seems a bit more realistic. These people were saying this was going to happen within the next year.

I knew MS had backed off of having Win 7 as 64bit only and that is why I had to dig a bit deeper into what they were telling me. I too would also like to see 64bit become the standard.

I have only had a few minor issues trying to run 32bit apps on a 64bit OS. But one major one I have seen recently was with some AV software that a user was trying to install on a 64bit Vista Business laptop. Called the vendor and they do not currently have a compatible version.

Both MS Windows 7 and Office 2010 will come in 32 bit and 64 bit flavours.
There's still a far way to move strictly to 64 bit as there are still many home users having 32bit pc and have not even heard about 64bit.

Most people are running 32 bit is true, but most are capable of running 64 bit. Anyone who hasn't heard of 64 bit has no idea what 32 bit is either. They just have a computer and it does what they want it to do (or not). If you ask the average user, I doubt that they could even tell you if they are running 32 or 64 bit IMO.

For AV I run Avast. AVG is good also. Both free. Links here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/115872-free-software-list-vista.html
