That's a generic message which does not lend itself to any obvious solutions. The cause is sometimes linked to too many filter drivers all competing for space (backup agents, anti-virus, firewalls...).

You might want to first call helpdesk at work. They've presumably had experience with the range of symptoms caused by this particular VPN client in their environment, and they might be able to suggest a fix that does not involve you dissecting your machine to troubleshoot.
