So I downloaded Vista x64 with built in sp2 RC. I have an msdn membership, and I put this on my laptop. It now says I have an eval copy. I understand that sp2 makes it say that, but my big question is that there is no way to uninstall sp2. Am I screwed when the final sp2 comes out? I understand you need to install previous betas to put final on - but anyone have any answer if its built in?

you can remove sp2 by going to windows update and view installwd updates and uninstall sp2

no, have headers cai, tune, baer brakes etc... very nice.. getting pro charger this year

as far as windows, i do not see uninstall sp2 anywhere... i guess i will have to wait and see.. since i installed vista 64 with sp2 built in. i am hoping it will just let me install final version...

My Computer

to answer my own question (after working with the MSDN team at MS)

I have to basically download vista 64 with sp2, burn iso, and do an inline upgrade (where I stick the dvd in the drive as vista is running). This is the only way I can get to upgrade to full version of SP2. The reason for that is Sp2 in vista 64 sp2 rc has sp2 instream and not as separate update.

I am now waiting for vista 64 sp2 to show up on msdn. Sp2 final is officially out to msdn subscribers now.

NO, you cannot Upgrade the SP2, and there is no way to uninstall it from your Integrated Installation. You will have to completely Uninstall your Vista Evaluation copy.

If you downloaded a New RC Vista SP2 installation, as opposed to just downloading the SP2 RC to your existing Vista Installation the Service pack is not a "add-on"/"update". It is part of the O/S, and I doubt you can simply "remove" it. You will have to completely uninstall Vista, and then re-install Vista again when SP2 is released to get rid of the "eval" issue. Usually the Evaluation versions of Vista/7 are time limited, and will lock Vista/7 after a certain date.

This is how all the RC "Evaluation" O/S versions work. You usually cannot upgrade to a released (final) version (i.e., Win7), but must do a complete uninstall, and then re-install.

If I installed a Release Candidate of SP2, can I simply upgrade it to a release version?

No. Pre-RTM builds are not upgradeable.
2. If you have updated your system by just SP2 Beta then you may uninstall SP2 beta and install the released version later on.
For the integrated installation, you cannot uninstall the service pack when the installation is complete. Instead, you would need to reinstall the entire operating system. Please refer to the "Installation Option" article at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd351467.aspx.
3. You can't remove SP2 beta from an integrated installation.
You may read more about these options at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd351466.aspx.
