What is the actual effect of trying to undo the priority changes now? An error message?

How does the process in question normally start? Do you start it manually, perhaps from its shortcut icon, or is it already running by the time you log onto Windows and see your desktop?

Is this the only process affected? (Experiment with something else that's unimportant.)

I start it manually. Always an error message. Cant set or change any of priority or affinity. Doesnt revert to normal after reboot or shutdown.

I'm going to guess that you've got bigger problems than "access denied" when trying to alter priority and affinity. Loss of apparent account privilege is a common symptom when a machine has been infested with malware, so I'd suggest you do a thorough scan.

FWIW, altering the default affinity mask is going to slow things down in all but a handful of extremely specialised scenarios.

ok I have mcafee. will run a scan right now

i actually have a dual boot. windows 7 with AVG that runs a scan daily and have seen nothing to indicate corruption. vista on other side with mcafee. will run thru scan now.

also when I shutdown for the night and turn on nxt day. all prgrams I used prviously are listed when I click on start. this just started happening recently.
