Vista anytime upgrade isn't working!

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Basic and have been trying to use an OEM anytime-upgrade to Premium edition. I did the online check and found my PC was compatable.

Every time I try to upgrade, everything goes well until the very end. At that point my PC goes into a reset loop. It resets, a blue screen states that netio.sys has some sort of problem (but is too quick for me to note any of it down - useful!), then I get the option of loading MS Vista or go back to the original version. IF I chose Vista the PC eventually resets and I start this little game again!

The only info I have managed to note down from the blue screen is: nsiproxy.sys or netio.sys and something about the memory dump (which I can't access - I have tried!)

Stop 0x0000BE (some leters and numbers in brackets, this is up for seconds so can't note down!)

I've tried to stop the PC resetting via the control panel. Once in the reset loop I can't do anything except Rollback to the original settings.

If I try to go to safe mode I'm told I need to reset so as windows can complete the installation.

I'm loathed to pay Microsoft 46 quid just to get help!

RAM test was found no problems.

This is SO annoying! Can anyone help?

My specs:
2 GB Ram
320 GB HDD
Intel Pentium Dual T3400 2.16 GHz
Mobile Intel 4 series express - Display adaptor

Try this:

There is a hotfix available for NETIO.SYS, which corrects a problem in the
ALE (Application Layer Enforcement) component. The problem specifically
corrected by the hotfix does *NOT* exactly match the callstack in your dump
below. However, your dump is clearly referring to ALE (eg the call to
tcpip!WfpAleEndpointTeardownHandler) and Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) -
so, it is somewhat related. You may be seeing a side-effect of the same or
similar problem, which crashes in a slightly different way on your machine.
See:http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/795825.htm

Some applications and services appear to stop responding for 15 seconds after you install a Windows Filtering Platform driver on a Windows Vista-based computer

Hmmm, the WFP hotfix from MS said that "the updated does not apply to your (sic) system" :( I'd seen that before when searching to find a solution - was worth a try.

The anytime upgrades have two options 1) upgarde or 2) fresh install. I've been doing option 1 so I guess I need to take a deep breath and try option 2 :S

I have created a recovery CD (the Packard bell software made me) So I guess I can return my system if it all goes belly up.

Any more advice would be greatfully recieved :D

It could be a result of Windows corruption- so the backup may not really help after all (as the recovery image is corrupted also)

This is what I would do:
Use the vista backup utility (check all boxes), and backup all your user data.
then boot into Vista Disk, delete all partitions and perform a fresh install on the unpartitioned space.

Well, full installation worked... but now I can't get onto the internet :S

The laptop will connect wirelessly, or directly to the modem but it only has 'local access' and wont connect to the internet :(

Both the router and modem are fine (other computer connects ok - hence this message).

did you:

update the Realtek NIC card drivers (Windows update- keep going back till there are no more updates)
then plug in the ethernet cable, RESTART computer.
