Hi Cowz,

You need to know that your motherboard can support quad cores. If you post what it is il check for you and if you dont know what it is then download CPUID and post a screenshot of the Mainboard tab

Hello Cowz,

What is the brand and model number of your motherboard? If it has a revision number, please post that back as well. This will help us determine if it will support a Quad or not.

Yes it is store bought I didn't know too much back then:(

And yes it is a Dell Xps 420.

And would making it quad drastically improve my performance. What am asking is will it be worth it ?

And would this be a good/trusted buy.

Just have a look at the quad cores for sale and when you decide on one post a link for it here. I'm not sure about that motherboard if it supports 45nm cpu's or not so if your wanting a 45nm quad core then your better waiting for a reply from someone who knows.

But it will support 65nm quad cores with a 1333 fsb

My Computer

On that link if you click the Processor Numbers tab it will show you the quad cores. Its just the bottom two that i know your motherboard can take the 45nm ones i dont know if it will.

Normally you have to install a bios upate to allow faster cpus to run for example when i bought my motherboard it only supported dual cores but now with the latest bios i could install a 45nm quad core

Okay thank you for your time and all that. Another quick question though, Will this be worth it ? The price and all to upgrade to quad ?

And I have selected this and do you believe it is a good buy and a trusted one.

Heres the support page for your desktop http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/root/en/product_support_central?~ck=ln&c=uk&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen Im maybe being blind lol but i cant see a cpu support list maybe you will have better luck

The upgrade to a quad core will improve speed if your doing things like listening to music, browsing the web and have microsoft office open etc all at the same time. Some pc games will also run faster as a result of the extra cores so my advice to you is to find out the best quad for the money your motherboard can take and buy it as this will be the last cpu you'll buy for that motherboard.

Sorry i cant help more but the q6700 is a good cpu but id hold of from buying it till you find if you can use 45nm quads.

Cowz,

After looking at your computer's specs, unless you usually have multiple windows and programs runing at once or run heavy CPU using programs and files (ex: videos, music or Photoshop), then you should be fine with your Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6850.

I can't tell if your computer would support a Core 2 Quad Processor or not through Dell since they dp not mention it. Looking at this though it seems that your computer will support it.

You may be better off upgrading your RAM to have 4GB of 800 MHz Dual Channel Dual DDR2 instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have decided to go with this.

I have looked around and notice that some Xps 420s have this. So would this work on mine ? And second would I need to get a cooling fan as well.

Thank you

Yes, it should work on yours as well. Make sure that when you get a retail boxed version that it includes the stock CPU fan with it.

Enjoy your new CPU. :)
